Carb suggestions for a 496 Stroker
« on: July 17, 2009 - 02:43:08 PM »
Hi

I have the following setup for a stroker 383->496. I would need your opinion about the carb choice.

Proform and Quickfuel are nowadays having good choices, but are there some principal differencies between them and what kind of experiences you have?

Crankshaft: 440 Source kit 383>>496, 4.250" stroke/6.535" rod.
Pistons: 440 Source .030 over, flat top -4CC, Compression Height, 1.320".
With 86cc heads, 11.0 CR.
Rings: Total Seal gapless

Camshaft: CompCams XR292HR-10 hydraulic roller. Duration @050 inch Lift: 242 int./248 exh. Duration: 292 int./300 exh. Lift .549/.537.
Lobe Separation 110 degrees.
Lifters: CompCams 8921, Pro-Magnum series.
Valve springs: CompCams 26120, beehive valve springs.
Retainers: CompCams 796, 10 degree

Heads: Ported cast iron, over 310 cfm @.600 lift
Rockers: CompCams 1.5
Intake: Mopar M1, single plane
Headers: Hooker Super Competition, primaries 2", 32"length, collector 3.5"

Ignition system: Mopar Perf. distributor, with MSD 6AL-2

Rear end with 3.55 gears, 3000 rpm stall converter.  The car will be mainly used on the street, but perhaps occasionally on the strip too... :burnout:

What would you be your recommendation for the carb?

I bought a Proform 850 last year. Although I only have a slightly hopped up 440, that thing is awesome!! I went 850, since it was the biggest that still was available with a choke. You might even want to go bigger??   :dunno:

Really, I slapped it on, adjusted the idle and fuel level and that was it. Jetting was dead on, and my car is quite scary when I nail it now on the hiway.   :grinyes:

Yep, I'm just in between the choice of 850 or 950 cfm

Any experiences from Quickfuel carbs?

I like Pro Systems. I just had one built for my 543 stroker and it was right on the money. The throttle response is wicked. A lot of racers use Pro Systems carbs. Give them your engine specs and they will custome build one for you. The one they built for my motor was a 1000 cfm.

I run a Proform 950 on my 451. Pretty wild cam and indy EZ heads. No stumble and smooth all the way from idle to full throttle.

:iagree:  They go on all my motors. Patrick at PS forgot more than most carb experts will ever know and he has testing equipment they don't have. Here's his take on carb sizing.

I'm a little bias because we live so close to pro systems but all our race cars had them on and if you give him the right specs on your motor it will be a bolt on and go part. We have never had a carb related issue.
