Out the box 440 source heads

Not exactly what I want, but my state income tax returns came in today and wife said I could by them. I have an all new 499 b engine short block setting on the stand with 12.5/1 compression or a bit higher.. Think I should? Or wait quite a few more months for the ported set?  This isnt a drag race engine, but it could be

Hi Alan,
I've got a set of Stealth heads on my 543 stroker that I had ported by my buddy that owns a local machine shop. I have been very pleased with them. I have recently been disappointed by 440 Source, but I can't complain about the heads. My stroker made 615 HP on the engine dyno. Glad you were able to make it to Carlisle. I missed it this year, but hope to go next year!!

I would say that if you were running stock 440 cubes, then out of the box heads would be great.  I think the 500" motor would like the ported ones better.  500" just wants to breath and those cubes can really move some air.

I was thinking about there heads until I bought  a 440 source water pump. The machining was really bad. I have to admit it scared me off any more 440 stuff? I'll wait and get Indy heads. Just my

well knowing that comparing dynos is usless I made 660 gross HP with ported Iron heads , the advantage is with 12.5 : compression you will effectively drop to 11.5 which still isn`t pump gas  friendly in my world , ultimatly what do you need from this ebgine is the real question

It's a fun time engine Neil. And they sell 110 race gas at the pumps here. I stumbled across these parts one at a time, then had them balanced and assembled it the day before carlisle.  I bought a 73 duster for 300 bucks with no rust. Well Im actually trading 300 hundred bucks in parts laying around for it. I got a trans laying here and rearends.  So Im going to gut the car and go to the 1/8 mile track now and then when Im home. Just to release tention now and then. I am planning on breaking it in in my barracuda for a few months while I build the 318 for my barracuda.

I can either buy the stock 440 source heads or that rust free little red express for 850 bucks.  That deal was thrown at me the day after carlisle.  Thought maybe flip the red and get ported heads to, but a little red would be cool to tow my barracuda up to the show next year.

Wouldn't the stock 440 source heads make around 500 hp.   A 3000 lb car is what it will be installed in and that will be sufficient.  Im not going to build a kill everything I can engine, just a toy to relax with. Planning on a dc cam 590 lift, 4k stall 32 inch tires and 456 gears. Thinking 6's in the 1/8 mile

The problem with big cubes and stock heads, depending on just how good the heads are, is that you could actually hurt the performance if they don't give the airflow that the engine needs.  You then need to back off on the carb, etc.

 Hey Al, aren't eddie heads just a little more.  I know $ are tight, but 440 source has screwed enough of the members here to maybe warrant a little bit of a boycott. Just my    Pete

I would basically skip the Lil Red Idea , they are too  light & short to tow with , I tried & unless you have a buyer they can be a tough sell , a friend sold one through auction & got less than 1/2 of what was invested into the truck
