Challenger Rallye Cluster question
« on: July 19, 2009 - 07:09:20 AM »
I'm looking to install a rallye cluster in my 1970 Challenger.  What I'm wondering is what, if any, are the differences between a '70 cluster and '71-'74?  Most of the ones I find for sale say things like "correct for a '71-'74 but works in '70 as well".  Is this true?

There are some differences, a couple I know of for '70 the reset for the trip-ohmmeter is through the panel rather than gauge face, same with clock adjustment knob... Earlier models had a higher RPM tach than later models.   But the later models DO fit the '70

All models will fit, but as far as correctness, there is 70-71, then 72-74.  The difference as stated above is the location of the clock and trip odometer reset knobs.

Earlier tachs go to 8k, later tachs go to 7k.

There is a member here that has the later 72-74 style gauges (reset knobs through the gauges, not the wood grain) with an 8k tach.  His car is an early '72 so that may be when they started to transition over to the 7k tachs.

I have an earlier '72 with the '70-71 style gauges from the factory, 8k tach and rest knobs through the woodgrain.  Just mentioning this so that you don't discount some 72 gauges in you search for a '70 style gauge set.

The wood grain color on 70-71's are different than on 72-74 units too.

The '70 rallye dash also does NOT have the seatbelt warning light to the right of the clock.

The gauge light bar has been brought up before. After the last go round, I believe the 70 Rally light bar is unique.

I have a '70 rallye cluster and a '73 rallye cluster. Whenever I take my dash apart, I usually put it back together with the other one. No difference functionally. Visually, the reset knobs are in a different spot, wood grain is a little different color,  and a seat belt light which I don't hook up cuz I don't want to see it. And the clock doesn't work on either one. I should fix at least one of them.
