8 1/4 to 8 3/4 & 904 to 727, what land mines to look for?
« on: July 19, 2009 - 09:39:08 AM »
I will be swapping my 8 1/4 rear end for an 8 3/4 and I'll be going from a 904 tranny to a 727. The first thing that come to mind is linkage problems with the tranny, but I figure there must be some other land mines along the way. The drive shaft length was another potential show stopper, I've got a local guy that can help there (shorten it I '' assume'' )
Can you guys give me some direction on these changes?
THANKS for your suggestions!

Slip yoke is different on the 727, u-joints may be larger on the 3rd member of the 8 ¾ as well as the length.

The brake backing plates may not fit if your plan calls for using the 8 ¼ to the 8 ¾ I don’t know that for a fact you will need to check.  :dunno:

Is it a floor shift car?

actually linkages are the same for both , the 727 is 4 " longer though , you need a new converter for the 904 , mount is the same as well .
the 8 3/4 is longer then the 8 1/4" as well so swap both at the same time or you will have to shorten the driveshaft twice , the axle tubes are 3 " on the 8 3/4 as well so you will need new shock plates , there are 2 driveshaft yolk sizes , 2 1/8" & 2 5/8 " so you need to match that up or get the conversion U joint to mate them up

It is a floor shift, the rear end I'm getting comes with brakes. But this thing has been sitting in a field for years, I've got plenty of work to do. I'm 3 hours away from Moser Axle, I think I'll have them rebuild it......................

Chryco,
Should I look for a bigger drive shaft, would that be better?
I've never heard of a conversion U Joint, is that an OK way to go?

THANKS for the help!

Driveshaft Length :
833 & 727 with 8 3/4 =  43 7/8" long (center to center) small joints....
904               "                47 1/2"  "

if you are that close to Moser why not just get there $400 8 3/4? :thinkerg:

The conversion u joint is no big deal it just has the small and large caps already installed.

If you want a used drive shaft I have one I could part with that will go right in.
