"Recommended Engine Red Line."
« on: July 23, 2009 - 06:11:14 PM »
From 1962 to late 1965, Motor Trend tests included the "recommended engine red line" in the test data.

I don't have every Motor Trend from those years, but I do have quite a few of them. I will list only Mopars but will list others makes if requested.

Year/Make/Model------------- Engine----- Rated HP---- Red line
1962 Chrysler Newport-------- 361-2 bbl-- 265@4400--- 5500 rpm
1962 Dodge Ramcharger------ 413-2x4---- 410@5400--- 6500
1963 Plymouth Sport Fury---- 383-4------ 330@4600---- 6000
1964 Dodge Dart V-8--------- 273-2----- 180@4200---- 5200
1964 Chrysler Newport------- 361-2------ 265@4400---- 5200
1964 Plymouth Savoy-------- 318-2------ 230@4400---- 5200
1964 Plymouth Sport Fury---- 426-4------ 365@4800---- 5500
1965 Plymouth Barracuda---- 273-4------ 235@5200----- 6000
1965 Plymouth Belvedere I--- 225-1------ 145@4000----- 4500
1965 Plymouth Sport Fury---- 426-4------ 365@4800----- 5500

I'd bet it don't wanna go much over 5500 if it's all stock.  :grinno:
Once we had Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope & Johnny Cash. Now we have Obama, No Hope and No Cash!

Tried to keep it stock as I could . It's not like I'm going to race it . It's 30 over (had to) small cam and intake  plus street avenger carb . About 431 hp good for the street . :clapping:

Unfortunately, that magazine stopped listing the recommended red line after 1965.

However, Car Life magazine did list these figures:

(1969 Plymouth 440 'Cuda, 3.55:1, 3-speed auto)
Speed in gears at rpm...
1st----------- 46 mph @ 5500 rpm
2nd----------- 78 mph @ 5500
3rd----------- 118 mph @ 5800

(1969 Dodge Super Bee 440-6 Pack, 4.10:1, 3-speed auto)
1st----------- 48 mph @ 6000
2nd---------- 81 mph @ 6000
3rd----------- 117 mph @ 6000

A comment from the text: "We also had the unique opportunity of making our top speed runs before reaching the second turn-out on the strip, clocking an indicated 122 mph (117 mph actual) at 6000 rpm and still rising. The car seemed to breathe so well and was pulling so much gear that it would likely run itself into destruction if given its head."

(1970 Dodge Charger R/T 440-4 bbl, 3.55:1, 3-speed auto)
1st............. 48 mph @ 5500
2nd............ 72 mph @ 5000
3rd............. 115 mph @ 5500

No problem.

If I had a Mopar with a 440, I would keep my redline at 5500-5600 (in stock condition, that is).
