440 stumble need help please!!
« on: July 28, 2009 - 06:37:06 PM »
Hello, My 440 had a stumble off idle, so I rebuilt the grungy 750 eddy to no avail.  the car starts right up, idles perfect, in gear and in park.  but if i give it a little throttle, is sputters and bucks.  seems ok if i give it more gas, it is just at low throttle.  even if im driving down the road, and get to speed, and back off the throttle, it does it then to.  any thoughts?  please?!

When you look down the carb with the engine off does it shoot gas out the pump nozzle with the slightest throttle movement? And does it give a steady stream of gas when you open the throttle??

Could be the accelerator pump.

My '66 Fury VIP also has a hesitation at low speeds.
I looked in the carb and pulled the throttle a few times. I saw fuel squirt into the carb but it didn't seem like a strong stream like it should be.

I haven't done anything about it yet but will post when I do.

Get rid of the Eddy. I had the same problem with mine. I put on a Holley 750 Street HP. problem went away!!

well Eeddy has 3 holes on the pump arm , try moving the rod 1 hole away from the carb , also they have 3 different shooter sizes so you can buy the set & use a larger squirter to get more fuel in as the carb is opened .Trick # 3 is to advance the timing a few degrees at idle , this will often cure an off idle stumble

ok Chryco, I went right to step 3 and checked the timing....it was at 20...I set it to 10(although it is jumping between 10 and 12), and the hesitation is about 90% gone.  thanks for the help.(didnt think the timing was an issue since it started up so quickly and idled so well, but that was it!)

Is "Eddy" short for "Edelbrock?"

YES.

Wow...stumble problem with Eddy...who woulda thunk it?

Apparently it isn't even the carb causing the stumble. I've had plenty of Holleys that stumbled and leaked and wouldn't idle right and had every imaginable malfunction. It's because of the first rate quality in China.   :smilielol:
