What exactly is this tag
« on: July 29, 2009 - 10:33:17 AM »
What is the tag attached to the fender tag?  Would this tag add any value to the car ie: is this rare?  It's made of aluminum and is about ready to break off, should I take it off before it's lost or is there any significance to it really? thanks in advance.

I think it's some sort of inspection tag on the assembly line.  Most have gotten clipped off.

i would save it as anything different adds,,you said it had numbers and letters,,this proably told the inspector on the line ,,something like an engine size or another option,,is your car a special order car?

I have the same type of tag on my 70 RT Challenger.
Is there any more info on these tags?

i dont know alot about these tags,,they have been called aux. tags to inspection tags,,what i have heard is that the numbers an letters on them are just like the fender tag codes,,if yours has them try and see if they cross over to a fender tag code option,,i believe they were usally took off at the line were they were built,,as i said before it told the inspector something as it went down the line,,but i cant say that for sure,,just what i have been told over the years,,most of what i was told was that is about the engine but may have been used for other options,,but i cant give you any links to show this,,but since they were attached to the fender tag,one can only assume it was part of a describtion, of the car being assembled

It depends on the year & all but.....

In a nutshell, the tags were stamped / punched as certain tasks were completed. If it is stamped with an inspectors number or punch out, you can assume that it 'passed' that inspection.

Some tags only have room for one inspectors mark, others have room (and names) for other inspections.

It has nothing to do with options.

your proably right Alaskan_TA  :iagree: that it is an inspection tag,,the only thing i meant about options is that it cleared the inspection of what it was,,

Thanks everyone for the quick responses and answers.  This place IS the best. :droolingbounce:.  Over the years the tag has been bent back and forth and is only held by a portion of the tag now.  Would it be in my better interest to take it off before it falls off and gets lost?

:2cents: IMO, I would keep it there, that's where it was meant to be.  Maybe use some double sided tape and hold it down so it doesn't get lost IF the tag breaks off.  :2cents:

I would take it off rather than risk losing it and just keep it with all the other paperwork and info you have on the car.
