car cloning ( stolen)
« on: July 30, 2009 - 09:13:11 AM »
did anyone see this on dateline? Where people take vins from existing cars in other states and make reproduction vins and stick them on stolen cars?  Car is then legite  as it seems as it is in the system, but really it is stolen and the people buying them have no idea.

Man people get more and more braisen and brash just to steal other people's stuff

Sounds like what they did in the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" movie, remember the red Challenger in the beginning?
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

The feds are working on getting all the state DMV data collected into one database.

For guys with new purchases, old cars especially, keep the car registered even if it is not drivable yet. If the paperwork is current it will help stop this type of thing.

The NICB also notices when a car VIN is insured in two diffferent locations.  :2cents:

Several states are in compliance now, the rest have time limits set for them. It is being done.

Now we (salvage dealers) have to do vin reporting to an outside data collection service. Just to combat this (and C4C) issues. Whats really F'd up is that fact that we have to keep a log and send all info to the state anyway. How screwed up is the government of ours... DONT answer this will be a locked thread in no time flat! Granted there is a few more things involved here, but I dont want to write an essay!
