'88 60 HP Mercury Outboard Question
« on: July 30, 2009 - 11:13:32 PM »
I bought this boat about 2 months ago,I have not run the outboard in the water yet, just in the driveway with "muffs" on it. I need to check the lower unit grease but do not know how to do it. I know that you are suppose to fill it thru the bottom hole and let it come out the top vent hole. There is no bottom hole .... any where. :clueless:  just a vent hole 1/4 of the way up the lower unit. There is no screw, bolt, plug or anything but the vent hole.

Can anyone shed a little light on this?I want to take the family out this weekend, but will not do it unless I can verify that the grease is full.

This the only pic I have at the moment, doesn't even show the whole lower unit.

Im not 100% but under the lower hub should be the screw, on the left side as viewed from the rear, just about where the hub turns down into the fin, you have to get under it to see it. or tilt the motor all the up. Let me know if it's not there and I will call my buddy a swift boat service and ask him if it's different on your model motor.

There is nothing there. The only place it could be is behind the prop after you take it off.  :dunno:

I am thinking that you have to fill it on it side, then set it up and let it run out the vent hole.

It says the same thing,to fill thru the bottom till it comes out the top vent hole. There is no other "bottom" hole. I can put some in it thru the top hole,it is just hard because there is no way for the air to get out as the grease goes in.
I might try to make a dipstick so I can at least try to see where the level is. There is none dripping out of the vent hole so I am alittle concerned .

that is what this one say also

Should be 2 screws. One toward the top, near the motor and one on bottom, near the prop. Open both to drain. Fill from bottom until it reaches top screw hole. Boat/ outdoor shops will have the proper oil and pump to use.

Use the recommended OIL. Do once a year. Dispense properly.

Sorry, got stuck helping a coworker on a rush, rush, the customers waiting gig  :hyper:

Ok, there are a few different gear cases for the mid to late 80's 60hp, (I'm assuming it's a 3 cylinder) depending on the gear ratio, and serial number.

The gear case drain and fill screws are on the stbd side, (drivers side of boat)
The fill screw is right below the "bullet", (where your gears/carrier assy./prop shaft/etc.. stick out.)

You should use Mercury high performance gear lube, (11.5oz roughly)
If your screws are stripped you want Mercury part #67892A06 for the lower screw.
79953Q04 for the upper screw
Mercury part #191833 for the o rings

Give me you motor serial #. It is on a tag on your transom assy just to confirm all of this.
