Fuel vapor separator- small block- what do I do?
« on: August 01, 2009 - 11:21:32 AM »
 :walkaway: :dunno: :dunno:
I have a 73 small block challenger with a 360.
When I tore apart my car, I put my fuel vapor separator in a bag and it disappeared.
I have been looking online fir a replacement for a while now, with no results. There is a replacement for the big block, but none for the small block.

Is there another solution that I am not picking up on?
Can you use a big block separator for that year?

Options?

Thanks,

Dan

Hate to ask a stupid question, but are you sure your lines are 5/16" and not 3/8"?  The only separators I have seen are for 3/8" lines with the 1/4" return line.  I believe the cars with a charcoal canister and 5/16" lines had a return line, but that might be something else.

Definitely not a stupid question. In fact, you brring up a valid point.

My car was equipped with a 5/16 line, as well as a fuel vapor canister. The canister that I removed had 4 vent lines on the side facing the tank, and two on the opposite side. The canister was rectangular in shape- approximately 4.5" x 3"x 3".

I have no idea what happened to it. I looked everywhere. I might have tossed it.
Any ideas what I should do?

Mike,
thanks for the offer. I appreciate it. I have no preference on shape, as long as it does what it is supposed to do.
Are you sure it's for a small block?
Please let me know.
Best,
Dan

Are you speaking of the smallish part that bolts to the body in fron of and above the gas tank? 4 hoses from the front of the tank go into it?

If so, it's not a small block/big block thing, it's a year thing. 73's and 74's had the part you seek.

That is the charcoal canister I was referring to.  I believe it is 73 and up.  A couple lines go to it from the carb and breather, I believe, and a single line goes out to a return line in the engine bay.

the simple solution assuming you want a feed line & A return line back to the tank is to simply get a 3 line fuel filter from a later year Mopar , late 70s or early 80s truck I think had them , the 3 lines are 5/16" in & out with a 1/4 " return nipple on the side of the filter , I have bought them for 4-5$ in the past

Yep, I need one of the charcoal canisters too. I have my eyes peeled...

tell me more about this Chryco:

If I can find out the year, I am sure i can hunt it down.
I'll start searching based on your description.
Thanks guys!

You can get it at any local shop, also?  Now that Chryco mentions it, when I first started looking for my vapor separator, All I could find in the stores was the fuel filters with the three lines, exactly like he said.

My 72 had the cannister till I removed it.
