Timing Tuning Question
« on: August 02, 2009 - 10:50:13 AM »
I am tuning on my 360 Cuda and have some questions.  :clueless: :1zhelp:

I tried setting the timing at 28 degrees at 3000, seemed like it was all in at 3000, and the car was tough to start and popped through the carb when you gave it any gas.

So, does that mean I had too much advance. Should I try more advance, or should I bring it in later?

Not sure what the initial advance was at that setting (forgot to check).

Also, should I be setting this under load (it tried, and the engine wont revv pased 2500 with the brakes on).

Thanks,
Jas

Yes , popping thru the carb would mean too far advanced.Do you know if your cam was installed with a 3 position gear?  That will also make a difference.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Yes it was, and I installed it straight up (as far as I recall). :)

You don't start by setting total. You start by setting the initial you want, then checking total and adjusting that to get you what you want. If you have a stock distributor it may not stop advancing until 4500. What distributor are you running? What is your initial timing set to? Does your timing light have an advance function?

28 at 3000? and tough to start, maybe you don't have enough initial.  A basic setting for a SB is 32-36 total mechanical.

Hmm, I have read of it beign done both ways.  But I will not be trying it that way again!!

Yes, I have a stock dist.  I forget what my intial is right now, but I am going to set that again this weekend.  Yes my timing light has an advance function.

I also put new srpings in the dist over the winter.  Tha kit cam with two springs, but said to keep one factory spring and isnstall one from the kit for a street car.  Should I have put both of the springs in? This would bring the advance in quicker.

Thansk for all the help guys

Well I do start with setting Total advance , I really don`t care much what it is at at idle as the engine spends most of its time above 2000 RPM anyway although the engine will respond far better with more initial timing at idle as well

So then a stock distributor that has a ton of mechanical, you retard until the total is what you want? It's like buidling a 20 story buidling from the 20th floor down because that's the priciest real estate there will be.

I like to start at the beginning of a book, rather than read the last chapter then the introduction.
