How do I remove this U joint?
« on: August 02, 2009 - 04:28:59 PM »
Since I am new at this, I have no idea how to properly remove this U joint.

The two ends that are in the driveshaft look like they are pressed in.
Once they are out, I need to replace the unit, since it is missing one end of the bearing race.

Thanks!

Pry out the clips on the insides of the cups and discard. The use a vise and 2 sockets one smaller and one bigger than the bearing cups to press out the cups.

:clueless: Hmm... I did not see any clips on the insides... :dunno: I Will look very closely when clean.
Have vise, will torque...

Same way I did the front control arms. Lotsa "elbow" grease and a torque bar....

Figured as much.
Thanks,

The clips go about 2/3 around the inside of the bearing cups and fit in a groove. Do you have a new u-joint ready to install? The clips come with the new u-joint.

No no Wade, when I worked in a garage years ago (dont do this with aluminum shafts) I was doing the ol' vise and socket routine. The senior mechanic at the time came up to me and said , boy what the H are you doing?? We dont have all day! With the shaft laying on the bench, he took alternate hits on the old joint rotating the shaft 180 degreees every wack or two. He had it out in about 10-15 secs.   Ben doing it that way w steel shafts ever since.

By laying the uncapped cross across the jaws of a vice, you will be successful even faster. Just hit the weld ring and not the tube. Bending the tube is a biggg no-no
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Man, I sure felt like I was  :horse:!!!!!

I did the socket routine.
The vice I have in the garage was a super heavy duty machine vice- with more than ample clamping distance and force.
Let's just say those u v joints did not want to play nice.
I superceeded the maximum clamping force of the workbench, and BROKE the corner of the bench off with the vice and driveshaft!!!!! :clapping: :22yikes: :eek2:
I caunbolted the mess of tangled crap and took the 65 lb vice to the basement, where my bench is attatched the the girder stancions!
Needless to say, those things were out in 15 minutes. ::)

the easiest part was putting the new u- joint in.

The most dissapointing part?

The driveshaft is 4" or more TOO LONG! :1zhelp: :o :bricks1: :swear:

is that a condition of the following?

1.) The driveshaft could have been a 904 trans driveshaft
2.) I have the wrong tailshaft

so, my question is does the driveshaft need to be shortened?

Advice appreciated,
dan

Chryco, many thanks!

I am lucky to have people here who have already been through this stuff before.
Just so I don't make a complete fool of myself in front of the wife- (like I haven't already) what Is a ballpark figure for shortening and balancing a driveshaft?
She is getting REALLY concerned about the cash I am dropping into the car without end...
Autohobbydigest.com comes up as forbidden..I'll try it fro
work, and see if it happens there.
If it still does not come up, is 4" a round figure, or a set parameter?

Thanks,
dan

Locally it is around $100 , it shopuld be cheaper where you are unless labor rates are $!20 / hr there
check the slip yolk first , the 904 is different from the 727/833
