locking fuel cap
« on: August 03, 2009 - 05:50:44 AM »
Can anyone tell me what locking fuel cap (brand, model etc) will fit a 72 Barracuda?

I have tried two different Stant caps... and neither will fit.....they wont lock down.

never found one for a Cuda , I was looking for 1 for 4C a few years back ..nothing , original caps for 70 Cudas are hitting hundreds of $$ on EBay , I have seen them over $1000

Hmmm.

Whats weird is that stant lists a cap for mine...and for the earlier ones too....but neither will fit.

I tried both....

It will fit in the hole but it wont press in/lock......no matter how hard ya push.

Most 71 owners have problems but not 72s... Is the Stant #10571? Get some measurements of your filler neck, depths & diameters as it relates to the cap,  & I will compare to mine...
I purchased a neat little cap at Autozone, # 5771, for $11.00 that works nicely.

Thanks Bullit...I will measure mine....ddidnt seem like the diameter of the hole was the issue....it just wouldnt click locked no matter how hard I pressed it on.....Lined up the notches with the tabs on the cap and pressed and pressed and pressed....no joy....Same with the 70-71...I actually got the 70-71 stuck cockeyed on the tube.....no way that one was working.

I dont recall the number, but it was whatever stant listed for my 72.  :clueless:  Then the counter guy had me try a cap for a 70-71, thinking maybe I somehow have that year filler tube.

Nope.

Now I am wondering if I have "something else" filler tube wise, but that doesnt seem possible either.

Right now, its a twist on type cap and it fits fine.

72rtchallenger, thanks for the link!  Bidding is up to $15 plus shipping already.....and no guarantee it will fit......

I have a stant ( i think) gas cap. Been on there for 3-4 years. I got it from the local checker, i can see if there is a model/part number on there for you guys. You have to line up the tabs and push/click it in. Works like a champ though!

here is another one that is $19.95 free shipping,,says it is for a 72 but seems like your having problems so i cant say it will fit,,but if your regular cap works,i dont see why it wouldnt,,but maybe somebody modified what you have  :dunno:

Well, the cap came in the mail.   Doesnt fit...not even CLOSE.

I went to the manufacturer website and the part number they sent me isnt right at all...cant even find the one they sent.

Anyways, here are some pics of my current cap....the dotted line in the first one is the gasket inside.

The cap I have now fits fine....and tight.   The locking cap I just got is too narrow...the locking tabs dont extend far out enough, nor is the depth between the locking tab and the gasket deep enough.

My cap & every cap I find listed has a bore of 1 3/8...Your 1 1 5/16 is 1/16 under...?
My caps depth is the same as yours 13/32
The biggest difference is the tab width which would make no difference the way my cap works
my cap measures 1 9/16 my filler neck is about 1 5/8   your measurement of 1 3/4 does not look right...

Cap I  have  came from Autozone, Cooling System Technologies, p# 5771
