Kickdown on tranny question
« on: August 03, 2009 - 11:05:33 PM »
I was under the impression that the kickdown linkage should be "all the way back" when the carb is at full throttle.

Well, I have it set there and find that the tranny wants to stay in second whiledriving at like 30-35...have to go 40 or so for it to shift out....also, when starting from a stop, it will shift thru 2nd but to get to 3rd you have to back off the gas some and then it will shift into 3rd.

When the kickdown was adjusted too loose it was hard to get it to drop to 2nd when you step on it.....now, it wanstt o jump into second REALLY easy...too easy....and stay there.

Can I back off of the kickdown some without hurting anything?

I'd back off on it some. My experiece has been "little' adjustments at a time to find shift points the way you want them.

(WOW! That was fast!) :2thumbs:

Ok, so I wont hurt anything if its not completely all the way back? Cool!

The tranny was rebuilt for me to be very firm and man when she is set the way she is now, she does shift nice and firm! If I can get her to not be so touchy as far as second, we will be set!

If I'm thinking correctly this morning ( coffee did not kick in yet!) move it forward a little bit. Take it for a ride and note were it shifts. Then go from there. as I recall you'll need a small allen wrench.

Ok....so the nuts on either side of the bracket dont work to adjust anything?   I thought they did but they didnt do squat for me the last time...I had to adjust at the allen screw on the ferrule as you are suggesting.....I think in my case the cable would have to slide back a bit through the ferrule?

Whatever tightens the cable (takes slack out of it) will make it shift later.

Ok, so basically I need to add a little slack so I shift earlier.

I slid the lock on the cable a bit and it helped....

I still have to back off the gas pedal sometimes to get her to drop out of 2nd....

What are the proper shift points , up and down?  I seem to be much closer than I was...in fact I could probably live with it the way it is.....
