Wrong Extension Housing for your Slap-Stick shifter?
« on: August 04, 2009 - 10:24:31 AM »
Here is how to change it:

1. Remove the driveshaft, crossmember and mount and let the transmission hang down in the back ( small block owner watch the distributor  cap on the fire wall, you can break it ).

2. Remove the speedometer bullet from the housing as it will catch on the bearing on the out put shaft.

3. Remove these six extension housing bolts (9/16 head)

4. Remove the output bearing snap ring cover  (two Phillips head screws) and spread the snap ring out of the outer race groove.
Pull the housing while holding the snap ring out of the groove.

Here is what you are going to see.

5. Put a new gasket on the case (if the old one is bad)
Slide the replacement housing over the shaft, hold the snap ring open while it slides over the outer race.
6. Start and tighten the six extension housing bolts (9/16 heads). The snap ring should pop into the outer race groove. You will know when it does when the ends of the snap ring get close together again.

7. Put the gasket on the snap ring cover and tighten the two Phillips head screws.

8. Reinstall the crossmember ,mount and driveshaft.

9. Check the fluid level when done.

Terry,

Many thanks...Many, many many thanks...
As soon as I got the tailshaft, I proceeded to wrench, and had it figured out pretty quickly.

I was a lot easier than I thought, with the only complication of the snap ring pliers. ( I had to improvise )

I had probably been working on posting the same thread while you posted this one.
I took a couple of pics while under the car, so it would be good reference for this thread.

Best,
Dan

I am including this detailed step by step from DMZ73 :

This is a step by step how to for removing/replacing the tailshaft in the small block 727.
If you are a  :newbie: to mopar resto like me, you just dive in and learn as you go.
In hindsight, I probably should have known to look at the tailshaft  a little closer to make sure it was correct a little sooner.
So, before you put the motor and trans in thecar, make sure you have the correct tailshaft for your application. :faint:
Identification:
727 SB trans cone in 2 flavors that I know
1.) 727 column shift without shift bracket support for late model car/truck
2.) 727 console shift with shift bracket support -early car models
So if your assembling a console shift car, and like me, you look under the car to find that you don't have the brackets cast into your assembly, you start shaking like an old dog trying to poop on a cold January morning? :nono:

if you are lucky enough to find what you need, and not have to take out another home loan, or ask Benny and his cousin Larry the fish for cash, it is an easy job.
Step 1.) get that car up in the air. No balloons, I don't care how easy Disney makes it look...saftey is the utmost importance. Jackstands on level ground work.
Step 2.) remove the driveshaft- it's realy not that hard.2 bolts, slide forward and rock out of position. If you are like me, there is nothing to remove.
step 3.) Please make sure you have drained the fluid, otherwise, ya might get a red shower..
Step 4.) remove the inside trans mount bolts. Brace the trans with a decent jackstand.
Step 5.) remove the other bolts for the trans mount.
Step 6.) carefully start to drop thetrans (while attached the the motor) a few inches. All you have to do is make sure you can access all of the bolts around the tailshaft case, and make sure you can clear the tunnel.
Step 7.)  crack the bolts loose , remove the screws for the clip access cover
step 8.) using Expanding clip pliers, spread the clip open until it starts to clear the bearing race groove.
Step 9.) using your other hand, gently pull the case rearward on the shaft. It's easy once you have cleared the bearing rave clip.
Step 10.) carefully remove and clean the gasket material.
Step 11.) using contact cement, lightly apply some adhesive the the mating surface of the trans case.
step 12.) apply gasket, making sure you have all of the he's lined up.
Step 13.) carefully put new shaft case over the tailshaft.
Step 14.) manually change the trans selector to low2, threading the end of the park/nuetral through the lockout cavity- this is located on the forward drivers side of ghe tailshaft case
step 15.) at this point, you take a deep breath
step 16.) the tailshaft case will be about 1/2 to 3/4" away from the trans case at this point. The case will want to rotate, so I inserted a few of the cadebolts at this point to keep the case steady- only finger tight!
step 17.) the bearing clip should be in your view from the bottom. Using your expandable clip pliers, open up the clip, and gently and firmly slide the case over the bearing race until seated.
Step 18.) click - it's on.
Step 19.) tighten the bolts to spec
step 20.) insert the speedo gear.
Step 21.) insert the trans support selector bracket.
Step 22.) assemble the trans mount, loosely
Step 23.) apply the trans support x bracket
step 24.) carefully Jack the engine and trans back into position.
Step 25.) hook up trans selector rods, trans kickdown linkages, etc. Don't forget the clips!
Step 26.) install the driveshaft after greasing spline ends.
Step 27.) torque remaining support bracket bolts to spec.
Step 28.) drop trans fluid
step 29.) crack a beer, you deserve it.
step 30.) thank TACtransman for helping profusely!!!

THANK YOU Terry!!!
I hope I did it correctly. I'll post pics tomorrow!
