Run on
« on: August 04, 2009 - 12:44:15 PM »
So I have my timing up at around 17-18 initial, no vac advance...seems I need that much what with my suspected) cam.

I have adjusted the idle down to where it will ridle in gear without dying...oil pressure at 20-24 psi....400-500 rpms or so....in park it idles up around 900---1000.

If I shut the ignition down as soon as I shift to park I am fine....if I let it idle up a bit I get some run on when I shut her down.

I have accell "header" plugs in there now.....I want say they have "11" apart of the number....a 3 digit number from what I recall....

Can I go to a cooler plug to solve this you think? I dont have any pinging....I may be idling a bit rich...but I am afraid to mess up what I have accomplished to date by messing with the carb anymore...LOL....would like to put new plugs in anyways so I thoiught i could try this....I also have plans fo a set of firecore50 wires.

Thoughts?

I've never had that trouble with any of my Mopars unless they were overheating , I did however have it in a 79 Clamaro and an 85 GMC truck. To take care of it, I would simply turn the car/ truck off in gear. Works every time

Yeah, as long as I turn it off as soon as I shift to park I am ok...LOL

Now, I am not yet running the 16lb rad cap (I have a 9lb right now)...wondering if maybe I have boiling or hot spots due to the lower pressure?

Motor is not over heating though...running cool according to the two gauges.....stock and aftermarket....

Umm, my only experience with run on was either too low of octane fuel, or a timing issue.    :2cents:

Still some carb tuning I'd supect!  Either that or the Stall converter you have is REAL tight.  It may be if you have a big cam in that thing.  Go for the carb tuning first.

For reference, my car Idles at 850P/N and 725Drive.

Only problem I've ever had with run on or dieseling is what we called it was the butterflys of the carb were not closing.  This could tie in with your extreme fast idle issue.

Even if the throttle plate was sticking open a bit, it shouldn't keep running on. For whatever reason, the fuel is being ignited by heat in the combustion chamber. I would say either your fuel is too low octane or too high volatility. Or, your timing is retarded causing way too much heat in the combustion chamber.

from extra fuel being dumped into the cylinder.....  :working:

I had this happen before!  :working:

I agree.  If you're looking to get A1 quality gasoline nowadays every time you fill up you're crap outta luck. Leave it in drive when you turn it off and your problem is rectified.

Thanks guys....

The return springs are brand new, butterflies seem to be closing fine, timing is set at 18 degress now with no vacuum adv.....idle is as low as I can get her.

The way it pulls hard once the rpms come up and a lousy low-end could point to a cam.........so the convertor may be a factor here.

Was thinking maybe have some built up carbon on the pistons and that is causing it.....was going to try an in-tank cleaner or seafoam at some point.....

Chally, your solution is probably the easiest.  It generally wont do it if I shut her down as soon as I shift to park......its embarassing to pull up in a lime green barracuda with everyone checking her out and then she chugs on after I shut her down.... :-[

Had a 440 chally during the 80's that used to do that every time with the crappy gas we had back then. Once you get used to it it's no big deal. Just don't forget to put it in Park.  :22yikes:

As I have gotten older I have realized that I am more likely to forget to put the car (any car) in park.....LOL.....at only 41 thats not a good sign......<grin>

I think part of it is that my daily driver is a motorcycle so jumping into an automatic car again ...well, ya know.

Well idle in park is only about 8-900 or so....

Any lower and she stalls in drive....

Mixture could be a bit rich.....
