318 Two to four barrell advice
« on: August 05, 2009 - 11:13:51 AM »
Hi,  When I rebuilt my 72 318 I installed a purple cam (for a 340). I'm very impressed with how well it opened up my little 318.  :woo:  I know I could build it up to 400hp pretty cheaply with enough time and energy, but I'm really just looking for cheap bolt on thrills right now while still being stock.  So recently I've been toying around with the idea of simply replacing my 2bbl with a stock 4bbl carb and intake.  Any advice on this?  Would this be a good move?  I'm not using headers so I'm not sure if I'd see much benefit.  If I can find a combination that peps it up as much as the cam did then I'd be all for it!

I used a stock dual plane intake and an Eldebrock 600 cfm. I like it .  :burnout:

an LD4B is the best bet if you can find one , that & the later 318 in the late 80s are the only small port 318 intakes I am aware of , the last one I did we used the very small 570 Holley Avenger carb

Thanks DoNot.  That helps!

Well CP, I thought I might just be able to pick up a used cast intake and a correct carb.  I'd have to look up the numbers to know, but I've seen them on  :ebay: here and there. I'm just not sure if that would do any good without head work and headers.  Does the edelbrock fit as well as stock?  Sorry if I'm just not following what you're saying.   :dunno:

The LD4B intake is specifically designed for the smaller 318 heads & is probably the best 318 4bbl intake available , the only other intake for the 318 was the police 4 bbl used int he 80s , all other intakes have the larger 340 / 360 port size which is a mismatch wihout a head swap

The 340 will have tall ports. It may not be ideal but it would work better than a stock 2 bbl. Besides, if you turn the 318 into a real performer or drop in a 360 than you would be set.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I put the LD4B on my 318 with a Eddy 650 cfm carb, all other parts on the motor are stock including the exhaust manifolds, it really woke it up. I found the manifold at Tony’s Parts on-line and got the carb, air cleaner and throttle extension from Edelbrock all for about $450.

If you already have the cam and headers at should really make it run.

Not only will it wake it up, but you should see some improvement in your mileage too.  That is if you can keep those secondaries from opening up.  Love the fun factor!

My 318 Challenger with 650 holley on edy 4bbl manifold returned 17 mpg on the 1,800 mile trip from Kansas via Oklahoma to Longbeach Ca. with the car carrying extra complete engine in pasenger front floor ( removed seat ), trunk full of spares and rear seat full as well.    :bigshades:
As said above a great fun motor which has suprised many of the opposition brands, good power and economy.   :burnout:

Thanks alot guys.  That is the exact kind of sound advice I am looking for.  What carb would match best with it?  I don't know anything about Eddy vs Holly vs Carter, etc.  I'm doing my homework now so that hopefully I'll be able to get it swapped this winter.  :2thumbs:

Well folks, I've thought about it for awhile now, and based on the advice I read here I've decided that I WILL be installing a four barrel.  I'm still doing my homework and know that I have plenty of time since I will wait until this winter to do it.  I'm going to keep my eye open for an LD4B if I can find one.

What other things will I need for a clean conversion? Brackets, springs, etc?

Chryco, does 570 seem slightly small considering DoNot is running 600 and Aussie 650?  I don't have any experience with carbs so I have no idea what size is too big or small.

318 can be picky about carb size , I generally double the CI but the kast 318 4 bbl I built we used the 570 Avenger & it works very well , you could use a 600 ish Proform or good modern carb as well

Mine came with the 650, on a basically mild motor there is no advantage in going too big.
