I had both a 1850 600 Holley and a 800 Thermoquad on my old 318 and it definately liked the TQ better, but I had to modify the LD340 Intake to use it because of the spread bore. The small Thunder AVS would also be a good choice for a LD4B Intake on a 318.

So does it matter what specific carb I buy?  I'm finding a lot of Holley's available on ebay.  Hypothetically if I look for a 570 or 600 and find one off of a 92 chevy truck, is that still going to work for me?  Are they similar, or engine specific? And what are the differences between the Avenger and Traditional?

the newer Holleys are better calibrated & have better adjustment features on some , if it is a spread bore style it probably will not fit well depending exactly waht intake you use

A few years ago I "matched" a stock 340 4bbl inlet onto a 318 by blending out the first inch of the ports on the heads using little grinding wheels on my drill.  It went like hell.  Not so easy without taking the heads off the motor though !

Ironically, I have a 360 here that someone has put a LD4B on !

I've decided on the LD4B since I've read so many good reviews.  The carb is what I'm not sure about.  I'm thinking about a Holley 600, but I'm interested more in daily driving performance (torque?) than peak rev power, so maybe the 570 would be better.  I've got a lead on an LD4B + Holley 670 (which I think is too big and I'll have to swap for smaller) but I don't know what would be a fair price for it.  And how much is an LD4B worth by itself?

thesado " And how much is an LD4B worth by itself?" Last year I paid $ 125.00. It looked almost new.

If you're looking for TQ from a 318 you're probably gonna be dissappointed. That's like looking for gas mileage with a 500 cube stroker motor.

A long time ago I had a 318 in an '82 5th Ave.  The 2 barrel setup not only didn't offer any low end power, but also had horrible top end.  I switched over to a Weind DP intake and a Holley 600cfm carb and the difference was great.  The top end was really good too.  With the 2 barrel, I literally had the gas pedal on the ground driving through Vermont and a VW Rabbit buzzed by me.  I'm guessing I was only doing about 90+mph.  With the 4 barrel, I got it to about 105mph with about 1-2" more pedal travel. (My speedo only went to 85mph, the Trans Am I was tailing told me how fast we were going.  ;D )

I later switched to a Rochester Quadrajet (Sorry, I know GM and Mopar parts aren't supposed to mix but that's what I had lying around.  :dunno: )  The Q-jet is a spreadbore like a Thermoquad.  I found the the low end pick up was actually better with the QJ vs the Holley due to the smaller primaries since I had not done a cam change.  :2cents:  Soooo...if you have a QJ lying around....  :poopoke:  :stirpot:

I went with the Edelbrock 2176 Intake and a 570 Avenger, it made a huge difference!
They're both going up for sale in about 2 weeks since I'm about to install a stroked 340.
If I had it to do over, I'd run with the same set up..................................

Update: Found an LD4B, its on its way (thanks Mike!).  After a lot of consideration I think a traditional Holley 80457 600cfm should work well for me. The avenger looks awesome, but I cant justify the cost for the difference.  Looks like all I'll need then is a breather.  Will any breather fit?  or are they carb specific?

all carbs use the same diameter base for the Air cleaner except the huge dominator series carbs , you can use a generic 14" drop base ac with a 3 " element like a K&N

thesado,
Did you get my PM concerning the 570 Avenger I've got for sale? THAT should be affordable......................6 months old, about 1,000 miles on it, with the original box..............
The reason I'm selling it is that I'm buying a bigger motor.

Looked into starting the conversion process over the weekend.   :working:  I'm trying to make sure I have EVERYTHING I need before I tear into the engine.  I don't want any surprises.  So I'm wondering if I can use my stock throttle linkages, etc, or if I need to modify.  And what is a throttle extension? Do I need one?
My car has AC (broken system), so I'm wondering if I should just remove the compressor altogether to avoid hassling with the mounts.  Thoughts?
So far I have only the LD4B (needs painted) and a Holley 650 dbl pumper (would have preferred lower cfm, but this deal was too good to pass up).

The list of things I still need to get:
air cleaner
carb gasket
port gaskets
carb mount studs
fuel line

am I missing anything?

Thanks!

you will need a 20-7 linkage adapter for the carb
