Driveshaft questions
« on: August 05, 2009 - 01:56:09 PM »
Yeah, it's me again...
I have a few more questions pertaing to the driveline- especially the driveshaft.
1.) is there a STD length for the SB 727 w 8 3/4?
2.) is it common for different shops to measure from different reference points?
3.) I heard that dodge used a shaft within a shaft design for some models. Is this true?
4.) the driveshaft that I have has a large 1.25 wide, 7" diameter cast steel cylinder right before the slip-yolk u joint. The machinist recommended a new shaft saying that that part should be gone, as it ads weight/mass.
I agreed with him in principal, but instructed him to keep that side anyway, and keep the shaft. ( I don't have the coin to throw at a new shaft right now)

please let me know what you think.
I'll post pics tomorrow.
Dan

yes there is a std measurement for a driveshaft in a Chall with a 727 / 8.75 , do I have it handy no
I always measure from the center of both U joints for length
I have seen some shafts with inner tubes
most of theshafts I have seen for E body do not have the weight ring on them , there were more common on 60s B bodys , if it is not interfering it can be left on

Thanks niel!
As usual, you rock!
The shop asked me for the following measurements:
end of the tailshaft case to the CL of the rear pinion U joint
48 7/8
tailshaft end to the CL of the rear pinion u joint
47 3/4
total distance the shaft protrudes from the case:
roughly 1 1/8- 1 1/4

Hope this is kosher. Otherwise, it will be expensive!

 :wow: :clapping:
the knowlege and experience on this site is truly dumbfounding.
That is way more than I expected. Way more. :worshippy

just wanted to confirm my final measurement for length..
48.75 from tailshaft to CL of rear yolk
1 1/8" from the end of the tailshaft spline to tailshaft housing
I have the other measurements from the slip yolk to the first U joint
I will have to add them later.

I remember they had all the different lengths listed in the old white Chrysler race manual. I have it somewhere but it was packed away when I moved in '99 and I haven't seen it since. They're probably listed in the newest one as well. It's $10 at Moparts>  http://www.mopartsracing.com/parts/tools.html

Dan, Would it help you if I measured my drive shaft... I have a '73 Rallye 340/727/8.75

I don't quite understand "from tailshaft to CL of rear yolk" where to measure.

Bingo! the length of the 318cu.in./904/999 trans is shorter than the 727 on the 340.

I had it shortened and balanced at CCI, in Marine City all for the price of 80$.
It fits perfectly. It went in easily, and best of all, it was not as bad as I thought it would be.

I think the 318 Challengers had 904 transmissions not 727's
