Well I was just a teen back then but I went to the local track every week it was open and I was a total motorhead. My dad bought me my first car when I was like 12, and I hung around with a guy that had both Max Wedge cars (along with his brother) and later a '68 Hemi RR. We'd cruise to the local hamburger joint with his Wedge car and everyone with a "hotrod" would leave. He pretty much owned the track with his Hemi car in the later years.

The Beach Boys lied. The 409 was no match for a healthy 413 or 426 Max Wedge. They were 12 second cars with enough tire and a competent driver even in the early 60's. There was nothing around that could catch it and I saw many try. I was the designated flag man
Once we had Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope & Johnny Cash. Now we have Obama, No Hope and No Cash!

Hard one to decide really. My #1 is 426 Hemi( the legend that still rules dragstrips) #2 is 440 Six Pack and #3 should surprise a few but I think the 2.4 Turbo in the 03-05 SRT-4 is pound for pound about as mean and bulletproof as they come. I know I sound bias on the 2.4, but mine has got 103k of HARD miles . It was raced on the drag strip for the first three years I've owned it. It was hydrolocked in the rain without damage except a fresh set of plugs. The motor sounds and runs as good today as when I purchased the car new in march of 03. I love the legendary mopar V8's but I like the turbo 4's that ma' mopar put out also.

318 -   '68- '96   28 years of faithful service and abuse in every concievable platform and use can't be a bad engine...

340 - '71 with the electronic ignition and Thermoquad intake and carb. Well tuned it will spit out almost any stock big block below 440" plus a bunch of stock 440s... excepting the Hemi of course..

440+6 - Having owned a built many, I simply love the driveability and power potential of these engines. All the power and none of the BS of the 426s.

Close tie for 4th would be the 413MW, 426MW, and 426 Hemis. Al fun and powerful but tempermental and short lived.

My favorites in no particular order:
440 Six Barrel Unbelievable engine! You can't beat the sound and feeling when all 3 carbs pop open.
'89-'90 2.2 Turbo II I have had one since '91. It has plenty of power, is fun to drive, gets 28MPG and mine has 250,000 miles on it with just a head gasket and timing belts replaced.
Any MAX wedge engine. You have to love dual quads on a crossram.

1) 340 - because of its power potential and the fact that every Joe Blow expects to see a Hemi or a 440 under the hood and are shocked when they see that a small block can keep up.

2) 440 - a true legend that most blue collar guys (like myself) can afford to build and maintain.

3) 426 - pure bad ass but big $$$
1972 BS23 H code Cuda, B5 blue, 340 streched to 416 cu in, 727 w/ 8 3/4 rear, 7.23 in the 1/8 mile and 11.38@117mph in the 1/4 on drag radials   Under restoration! Coming soon... 440cuin R3 Indy SMALL BLOCK monster!!!!
