Author Topic: If i'm going to upgrade the brakes. which spindles should I get? Later A, or FJM  (Read 3866 times)

Went to my first track day on Tuesday, and I'm hooked. Played with the Porsches and BMWs for 2 sessions, until my rear axles seals let go, :walkaway: and I had to park it and ride shotgun for the afternoon. Too much play in the axles we think...

Diving into corners with 0 road feel, and stock brakes made me realize I need (ok want) to upgrade the steering and the brakes ASAP. I started talking with HP2 about brake kits, and it seems like upgrading to Police/HD 12" rotors is the cost-effective way to go, but to do that I need to swap spindles (my 73 has the small inner bearing). 

I should be able to find some here in Ontario at a wrecker, or Moparfest is next weekend, but should I go with the 73-75 A Body spindle, or the FJM spindle? Which years of the FJM are suitable?

Are you sure your 73 has the small bearings? I ask as I thought it was the 73-74 E-body spindles that worked best? That's what I have and just bought the caliper brackets and rotors? Check out this article1

Another member Boydsdodge ( Jackson) lives in TO as well I met him last week and bought some rims and other stuff from him. Maybe get in touch with him, as he is a good source for parts? Hope that helps!

73 is the perfect candidate for the large rotor swap.  Should have the correct spindle.

You just need the larger caliper adapter & a set of larger rotors.

My 73 is kind of a franken-Chally. It definitely had parts from several other cars, and so the some of the front end may be from a 72 or earlier. Also could have small bearing spindles from the factory.

When I first got it back last fall, it started making wheel bearing noises on the first long drive, turned out that the inner bearing was loose around on spindle, too big! New bearings were put in, but there were 2 bearing sizes listed for a 73 inner, and they got the wrong ones...

If you have to buy spindles you might want to look at the magnum force dropped spindle. If your into autox then you can use bigger sway bars and still drop the nose. A few members on here have they and seem to be quite happy with them.

If you have the 70-72 spindles, then get a bearing spacer from Doctor Diff or even maybe HP2 (he has one set last I remember) Will cost ya $50 + shipping.  Then you can run the 73+ rotors.
The 73+ BFJMR spindle is a very acceptable choice, but why change to it if ya don't have to.  People will argue the benefits ad naseum.  Upper Control Arms are the more worthy investment.
As for the Magnum Force dropped spindle... The jury seems to be out on them.  Magnumforce couldn't answer what it did about roll center.  So until they give an answer, or somebody buys them, and does the math for us, personally, I'm just gonna keep running the small inner bearing spindle.

Never seen two sizes for '73..but if their from earlier model I can see that.

Any Volare ,Aspen ,5th Ave ,diplomat spindle will work but the caliper adapter is Magnum ,Charger , Cordoba
 I actuall have a set of the adapters for $100 if you need them

   I have two sets of spindles ('73&'74) from my Chally & 'Cuda that I am not using and would be willing to sell. I will be at Moparfest on Saturday, if you are interested.

If you get Dr-Diff's Bearing spacer for the larger bearings and rotors, Make sure that you get the Grease Seal that you will need from him.  He has plenty of the correct ones. A standard one will not work anymore.  I was checking out those spacers at the Nationals after the 70-72 rotors went up over $130.

I have the Magnumforce drop spindles on my car. They are a high quality piece, and I'd venture to say much stronger than the original. As for the roll center, I didn't measure/calculate it, I was pretty much stuck with the drop spindles to get the nose back down after I went to the 1.12" bars. And if you plan on running larger torsion bars, anything over 1" basically, and plan on keeping the ride height at stock or lower you will probably need the drop spindles, especially if you've got a smallblock. Or you'll have to re-index your torsion bar anchors. With the 1.12" bars I was right at, or slightly above, stock ride height with the torsion bar adjusters maxed out.

I think I would replace the spindles before I went the spacer route? :dunno: Used ones are pretty cheap. I just have a bad feeling about the spacer set up?

With the 1.12" bars I was right at, or slightly above, stock ride height with the torsion bar adjusters maxed out.

When I first bought my car, the torsion bars were on the wrong sides making it seem like I had to max out the adjusters to get it close to ride height. Have you tried switching them side to side?
