Terry - TAC I've got a 518 pump question for you
« on: August 07, 2009 - 04:38:33 PM »
I've been fighting this no pump output problem on my 518 swap and I think I've got it narrowed down to the pump itself. I've got the 3 check ball pump, but I'm not sure that the stator support is the correct one for the pump body (bought this trans as a core off craigslist). Is there any way to tell the difference between the Lock Up and Non-Lock up stator supports? Any chance someone has a picture? This is the last thing for me to check before I just replace the entire pump assembly, but If I can just replace the stator support, I might be able to save a couple of bucks.

I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Wait a minute,on your year you have three rings on the forward drum so you need a two ball pump like this one.

Late Non Lock Up stator with three rings on the forward drum:

We talked about it, but I had not removed the pump to double check again until last night. Of course I forgot to look when I had it apart, so I'll have to pull it apart again. After looking at your pictures, even if the stator support was wrong it doesn't seem like it would cause the pump not to work, like you were saying before. This is the weirdest thing I've run into in a while. I've got good pump engagement of the converter (I mocked it up with just the converter, bellhousing and front pump bolted to the engine), between 8 and 10 qts of fluid in it and just nothing when you spin it with the starter. No fluid from the cooler tap, no noise if you put your ear to the fill funnel while cranking -no matter what position the shift lever is in.

If you have a lock up (3 ball stator ) on a Non lock up, it will cause the problem of not filling the converter.

It's a lock up model with a lock up converter

I "think" I have finally got this sorted out. Just to backtrack, I'm running a conversion bellhousing that locates off the front of the pump and the bore of the pump in the case. Although I followed the directions given with the bellhousing, it wasn't compressing the pump gasket. I ended up making a .045" shim to fit between the rear of the bellhousing and the front of the pump. Previously I had a .023" shim in there and last night I was able to get some fluid flow from the cooler output fitting, but it was areated. I'm pretty confident the pump is working now, the converter was full of fluid when I swapped the shims last night. After swapping out the shim with the thicker one, I get good cooler flow that has some pressure behind it, though I don't read any pressure from the accumulator tap -maybe because I can't run the starter long enough- who knows but at least fluid is being pumped.

I think I am going to run with it......
