Console and console bracket location
« on: August 08, 2009 - 10:13:51 PM »
Hi!
I got a good used console at Carlisle this year and want to put it in. I don't have any brackets yet.I'll post something in the parts wanted section. So how would one go about mounting it? Is there a dimension from the firewall or something? My car came with a B&M shifter ( auto 727) Yuck! but I'll have to live with it for now. My car was originally a 6 cyl , column shift. I have replaced the column with a floor shift column.
Thanks Brad

Are you planning A/T? Or M/T?

Here are pics for the M/T bracket locations for the center console.

Will you be able to get the console in with the B&M shifter in place, or are you planing on getting the whole Slap-Stick assembly?

I'll try and use the B&M shifter for now unless I come across a good deal on used slapstick with all the linkages and brackets. For now I'm sticking with the 727 Auto, thanks anyhow Topcat.

Starting locating my console brackets today.  Cars a shell so no trans in it, going from column to floor.  I had a section of floor that was cut out, and ground off the brackets.  Using the same dimensions as the old tunnel and tacked it up good. The shifter spring is loose and looks like grind and relocate.   Mouted it with the center shaft a that goes though the hole in the floor but centered must be off because spring falls in park.  So have to move mounting again.  Beware!  I will tackle it more monday and get it as close as possible.  Don't you love mopars + 1/4" -1/4" there, crazy 3rd shift car lol

Not a picture, but an illustration from a Dodge service manual. I am trying to fix the slop in my assy. I'll see f I can post some pics if someone doesn't beat me to it! Hope the illustration helps with some details! :2thumbs:

If someone could post a picture of the kickdown lever/bracket that would help! Is it unique to e-body's? ( kickdown lever) I ask as the one I have now doesn't quite look like the one in the service manual picture? I'm swaping from a cloumn shift to a floor shift so I'm gathering parts for a slap stick set up. Moparal is setting me up with the parts but pictures are very helpful!

Hey Brad,
There's a few pics of the kickdown linkage in the "transmission" section. If you do a keyword search under "kickdown" you'll find it. Other than each end (carb & tranny), there's not a whole lot to take a picture of due to the location of the linkage between the motor and firewall. The trick is getting it adjusted right and that thread covers it pretty good.

If your swapping in the console linkage, its best that when you get the linkage out of an ebody, or late bbody (they are the same and certainly cheaper from a yard) cut out the whole floor so you have a reference.   I didn't and it was a pain to get everything lined up right.

My linkage is still bolted in place, and my painter forgot to weld them down withn he painted, duhhh.   So I'll have to finish that myself, but it works fine that way.

Sorry I don't have pics for you, but its the same as the ones you saw.   I'll see if I can get some measurements and pics later for you.   I just started from the reference point of the shaft hole, that you'll need to cut, and bolted in the vertical shaft, and then just worked back to the shifter from there.

As far as the kickdown linkage, any small block linkage will work as long as its for a 4 brl carb (that is, if thats what your using) and just hook it up.   If you can find a 4 brl diplomat in yard, they have a great kickdown link setup.   Just be sure to get the throttle linkage off the intake as well, if your switching from a two barrel.   There are a lot of good parts on those cars.  especially on the cop cars.  Lots of heavy duty parts on those cars.  Transmission, brakes, radiators, firm feel pwr steering gear boxes and pwr strng coolers....  good stuff.  I think the pitman arms would work well on ebodies too, and they are fast ratio.   Those cop cars are a good place to start when upgrading a Challenger....or anything smallblock for that matter.
