Vapor Seperator Effectiveness
« on: August 09, 2009 - 10:19:25 PM »
I currently have a single 5/16 fuel line to the fuel pump feeding my 440 with the added six pack.  I had a slight issue with vapor lock and have a couple of questions about the effectiveness of the factory design vapor seperator.  Are the 3/8 feed line, 1/4 return line, new sender and vapor seperator actually effective at getting rid of vapor lock?
I would like to avoid putting in an electric fuel pump if the factory system really works.
If the factory system isn't effective, would an electric pump pushing through the 5/16 line be adequate or do I need to run the dual lines AND install an electric pump?

I have a 440-6 complete factory set up in my car right now. Original carbs, exhaust, everything. Mine has the ca emission set up. I have everything hooked up on mine as factory and still run a 5/16 fuel line. I have no issues with vapor lock and im useing the stock 6pk pump. I do run the 3 nipple breather on the valve cover and all the lines to the tank along with the vapor return line from the fender well. No issues even at 100 plus degree temps and 3.5k cruisin speeds

I am unfamiliar with the California emission set up.  Does it include the Vapor seperator with the return line to the tank?

I am running a 6 pack, also, and when I upgraded to the 3/8" fuel lines I added the separator.  I kept it in for about 4 months then recently pulled it out.  The problem I was having was that if the car sat for more than a week, the fuel in the carbs would drain back out and into the tank, and it would take forever to start the next time.  Several times I even had to pour gas directly into the center carb bowl.  Since putting a standard WIX 3/8" filter back in place, I have driven it several times in near 100 degree weather and have had no problems with vapor lock.

My center carb bleeds down to. It sets for long periods when im out of town. I just spin the starter for about 10 seconds without pumping the gas, then it picks up. I pump it up a couple times and it comes alive again

I decided to upgrade to the 3/8 line with the 1/4 return and the vapor seperator.  I ordered all the stuff yesterday.  I figured if the vapor seperator didn't do the trick, I could use the bigger fuel line and return line for a regulator and electric pump anyway.

I will post updates on the topic after I install the stuff and see if I still have the issue.

It looks like adding the return line and vapor seperator did the trick.  Of course it hasn't been nearly as hot to be absolutely sure, but the car idled in gear for more than 20 minutes without vapor locking.
