**Tranny Pan Seal????????**
« on: August 10, 2009 - 10:44:27 AM »
My transmission pan seeps fluid apparently from the seal at an alarming rate.  I changed the fluid & put a new gasket on the stock pan sometime back, have re-tightened the bolts a couple of times but the fluid continues to ooze.
  I need a final solution?   :1zhelp:

It is probably not the pan gasket. Look for something ABOVE the pan gasket (filler tube "O" ring, manual shaft seal etc)

Yeah, It was always the dip-stick filler tube o-ring with mine. Only once was it the shifter shaft seal, and that was a bad leak. The other harder to replace o-ring that leaks is the front pump outside o-ring.  That one always goes out the bottom and blows to the pan, making it look like the pan too.

Terry / Rob, Kinda hate to disappoint you guys but it is definitely the pan seal primarily at the right front corner. Probably some RTV will solve the problem?

So while I have to remove the pan this will be an ideal opportunity to install the TransGO kit K22905 that I got from Terry some time back.   It appears that the Manual Shift Seal will be coming out with the valve body.  As a preventative measure should I replace this seal, or is there a "FIX" I can make?  How can I obtain one if needed? I have checked a couple of places and either they do not list or I cannot ID the part...
I'll replace the O-ring in the filler tube also, anything special I should know about this? Any ole O-ring will do?

Appreciate your Help Guys
Wade

Once you pull the valve body out, you can easily tap out the shifter shaft seal. You'll see it in the hole that you are pulling the VB down out of after pulling the bolts. Take it up to the auto parts store and they'll be able to find it.  Very easy to change if the valve body is out and hard to change if it isn't.  Might as well also change the little seal on top of the shifter shaft on the VB too. It is a small little seal around the throttle pressure shaft, that the kick-down attaches to. You'll see it when you look at the valve body.

I use and o-ring for the filler from my o-ring assortment box from Harbor Freight. I clean out the hole with brake cleaner, then I lube the tube and o-ring with a little RTV to help it slide in and not nick my o-ring on the sharp edge. I then let the RTV harden before I fill the trans.

If you are running chrome pan?  If so, when you have it off make sure you rough up the sealing surface.

:iagree:  I also buy quality gaskets & spray the gasket with Hylomar making sure that none goes into the pan or trans area. Any RTV or Hylomar inside the transmission can cause the valve body to foul.   :2thumbs:

not to hijack your thread Wade, but I was wondering how this fix is coming along.
I seem to have the same problem with mine.
I have trans fluid all over the floor, and it's coming out of the same spot.
Do I need to drop the trans fluid level to fix the dipstick tube O-ring?
Definitely a pain in the fill in the blank..
I only have a few quarts in, so it's not too bad, I think..(knowing my luck who knows)
let me know-

Dan, I have not dug into this yet, just picked up the shifter seal today... I believe the fluid will run out if you remove the dipstick tube unless you have the front raised.. I'll be draining the tranny anyway to drop the pan & correct my poor pan seal with RTV.

Dan,
put a drain pan under the tube, then pull it out. Then use one of those big suction syringes to pull out enough so that the fluid is below the contact area. Then clean the area with your finger on the rag with brake cleaner, then install as I stated above.

Might as well just drop the pan. That way you can change the filter and adjust the band.   Maybe weld in a drain plug in the back.

Thanks for bringing this up... I' just reviewed the service manual & it references tightening the adjuster to 72-inch pounds & then backing off 2-turns for the internal low-reverse band & 2 1/2 turns for the external kick down band (small block 727).... Are there any other static adjustments that could be made?      Seeing I don't have a inch-pound torque wrench is there a seat of the pants approach or do I need to find a wrench.

DO NOT back the kick down band off 2 1/2 turns. 1 1/2 turns at the most.

I don't have or use one either. I just snug it up by feel with my little 1/4" open end then back it off the correct number of turns.  You are basically taking the play out of it.

Have my valve body out....about to drill the hole into the spring pocket per the TransGo instructions GULP.... They call for a .180-.200 hole... My drills are fractional, would the 3/16" be the one?

Also do the neutral safety switch ever leek through the switch?...When I removed the plug it was full of fluid.   Recommendations?
