I would not rebuild the 318 any way. I would do a 360... same price + more cubes and more torque.

You can rebuild the 318 for half the price of a new 360, buuuuuuttttt, I do agree that the 360 would be the way to go.  I was just pointing out the 318 option as a way to save a couple thou, but in the end, you still have a 318.

Under $2,000.00 for a rebuild.  The cheapest 360 crate I have seen is $4,000, without accessories and carb.

I'm not talking about a 360 crate engine,I am talking about rebuilding a 360 core. It cost the same to bore,turn the crank,gaskets are the same price,pistons might be a little more. ..........................

And here is the latest installment in "As the torqe converter turns".   :bigsmile:

I called Transgo today and then the shop.

Transgo call:

They said they have seen the issue before.....it's a lack of pressure issue, not too much as the tranny tech had suggested.....possible issues:

- the "all time converter feed" hole was drilled in the valve body.  tech said that in the SK kits (shift kit only) that was a step...but NOT in the TF-1 or TF-2 reprogramming kits. So if the hole is drilled, it was either drilled too big when someone else rebuilt before or the shop drilled too large by accident.  Said it can be restricted down to solve the issue.

- too much forward clutch clearance

- leakage in the forward clutch circuit, possibly caused by the seals/rings that was suggested by you guys already

- or, a bad pump  (remember that the tech had suggested that the vibration I have could be beating the pump up...so what will a new pump run IF that is what the tech comes back and says?)


Shop call:

I called the shop right after that and talked to the tech who did my work.  He said he talked to Transgo (because he knew that was my next question probably) and he said they said that nothing in the shift kit could cause a vibration, that it was something else. I almost felt like he was washing his hands of it. So I kind of interrupted and said that I agree that nothing in the kit could have caused the vibration and told him how I pulled the tranny saturday to address THAT issue by swapping in a different converter. He asked if I was going to put the another convertor in to see if it cured the vibration issue . I told him I had a buddy loaning me his good working stock stall converter to see if that fixed the vibration.  He said that sounded like a good plan and that he didn't think it could be engine internal issues as it runs too good to be that....

I then told him that I also called Transgo specifically about the engagement issue and related the above "fixes" to him.   So  I said that I was planning on dropping the tranny off with him as he requested before so he can look at the pump and figure out the other issue.  He agreed and said Tues or Wed to drop off would be fine.  I confirmed with him that he had installed a reprogramming kit (not just the SK kit above) and that he didnt drill anything.....he confirmed both.

I told him that he could take as much time as he needed, since I couldn't get back to reinstall it until after next week, which is actually not true...but figured I would rather concede the time and let him take his time and figure it out...a couple weeks should be golden I would think.

He seemed ok with me on the phone. Didnt seem put off by my calling transgo.

So hopefully this will work out.

I'm a bucket of nerves again......LOL

I tried the stopping in every couple days years ago on a motorcycle job...the shop was swapping in a motor for me......The guy didnt seem to appreciate my "butting in" as he called it when things came to a head later.........The last trip I showed up and found them swapping in a different motor than I was supposed to get...one that had like 50k more mile on it than the 20k motor I bought....."Oh that one didnt run so we were gonna try this one.  I was gonna tell ya.! And the crap hit the fan.

That is one reason I have little trust anymore for shops, even though this shop hasnt yet shown any reason to NOT trust them. I am tryin gto keep that in mind and assume the best...I am just not wired that way...LOL.

Not sure if I know these guys well enough to show up with coffee/donuts and not look like I was scamming or something....LOL

I will be polite and just play things as they come I guess.

Like you said...patience.  (NOT my strong suit).

Yes, but he was, which is where I was getting my numbers from.  Besides, a 360 rebuild still requires the core which he would have to buy.  Either way, this is going nowhere so I'll leave it at that.

You can't get a NEW pump for a 727 any more,just rebuilt.

Still a good question though....during a typical rebuild is a rebuilt pump used or is that determined case-by-case?

On the 360 discussion above.....I see where both of you are coming from.

Didn't realize I would need a core at those prices......the ad seem to indicate an outright purchase.

There is a guy I met at a show who had his 360 punched out by a local guy and he had nothing but good to say about the guy.....that would be my only lead on who to use should it come down to rebuilding/souping up a 360.  I dont wantt o end up being in the same situation I am in with my trans (not being sure).

I figured if I bought a 360 crate that is already beefed up I would be done......

My bad, I did not mean a core that you send in when you buy a new crate engine.  What I meant to say is if you went the rebuilt 360 route, you would need the 360 block to start with.  With that said, if you know some guys that had them built locally, I would look into that more as to what shop they used.  It will end up cheaper than a crate engine, plus, if the shop is good, they will ensure all of the clearances are good, and everything is assembled correctly.  Just do a search on this board alone about crate engines, and for the most part you will see horror stories.  For your own good, you would want to take it to a shop and have them pull the valve covers off and check the lifters, etc for good oiling and proper adjustments.  Another alternative is to get a crate engine through a source that will put it on a dyno before sending it out.  That way it will already be broken in, and something like that you should be able to drop it straight in and go.

I understand this is all far down the line, but an engine swap/rebuild is definitely something you will want to put a lot of thought and research in to.
