Blue Holley to Mallory 110 fuel pump question
« on: August 14, 2009 - 11:17:28 AM »
I'll try to post a pic later, but the noise from my holley pump drives me nuts. 2 weekends ago I isolated it with rubber, but it made no difference. Its mounted just in front of the tank on the cross rail above the axle, about 9 inches downline from the sender. I have a 440-6pack and no return line.
My question is do I need a new pressure regulator set to 6psi? I think there is a regulator in place now, set a few inches beyond the holley, but it could just be a filter. I didnt look close at it. But I assume one is already in place. If so, do I need a new one for the mallory unit? or will the existing regulator work?
Oh, and do I need a new relay as well? Summit suggests a 30amp relay, but I think they suggest the same for the Holley, so I hope I'm good to go already.
Thanks.

You should be fine with the existing relay and regulator. I know the Mallory says it rated for street driving, but I found mine was putting out 11 PSI, which is too much. You will also love how you can't even hear it running.

I had a Mallory 110 and it was decent. IIRC you can get the return to tank regulator or the non-return type regulator for it.

I had 2 holley blue pumps in my valiant last year. I updated to BG400 this year and it makes less noise than those pumps. And its twice as big  :smilielol:

Well, its not for street use anyway and 400gph is not needed normally in any street car.  :)

tow a small trailer behind ther car & hope the noise doesn`t travel that far

the real answer is I have found no effective way to to hide the noise of the Holley pumps other than to drown tham out with open headers

Ok, the mallory 110 unit arrived tonight, and though it is a little bigger, it looks like it should be a pretty simple swap into the existing fittings/holes.
I noticed the holley has standard brass fittings into and out of it, but looks like teflon tape was used. Mallory directions say use a "thread sealant compound from a hardware store" but dont use teflon tape cause it could damage the gerotor.
Can I just use teflon from the tube?

I used liquid teflon from a can and no problems with the same pump as you have. Mallory 110.

Great, Last weekend I installed the Mallory 110, and though it was a simple swap, I decided to replace some of the rubber fuel hoses, but not all. Wouldnt you know it, the only one I didnt replace split, and dumped fuel all over my garage and made a total mess.
Well, a couple fixes and about 3 hours of cleanup later I get it running, and all seems well.
It sits for the week, and I take it out this morning, and after a couple miles I hear the new pump start droning, even worse than the blue holley. After bringing it home, and checking the connections, etc, I start it up and its running quiet, but while idling for a few minutes it starts whining again...loud.
The pickup on the pump is an inch or two below the outlet on the sending unit, so I dont think its struggling to pull fuel from a full tank. Is backpressure maybe building up? I have no return fuel line setup.
Thanks.
