72 cloned to a 70
« on: August 15, 2009 - 08:13:33 PM »
Hi everybody’ I was looking over the forum about some info on converting a 72 into a 70 clone. My car is currently at the body shop getting ready for panel work. My question is since it is going to need a new grill and panels replaced would it be worth swapping out the rear taillight panel and front grill to build a clone? It is a real bs 72 cuda 340 #’s so I don’t know if that’s a good idea or how much it will cost/need? Could I please get someone else’s opinion?

I'm sure this has been done, but it will cost $$. The front fenders were different in 70-71, so you would need to cut and weld on your 72's to get that grill to work. Pretty much the same on your tail panel. As with any great idea any of us come up with, the bottom line is how much you are willing to spend to pull it off. It can be done, but....    :money:

In my humble opinion, keep your car as is. Look for a new front grill. I actually like the 72-74 Cuda grill.     :2cents:

It’s your car you should do what you want to it.  :2thumbs:

However, you should also know that it takes more than the tail panel and fenders and grille to make it a 70, you will need headlight buckets and replace (weld in) the side marker lights as well and 1970 grill parts are not cheap.  :2cents:

mine is a challenger and i cloned a 72 to a 70,,as i just like the look better,,my brother has a 73 cuda and we are going to make it look like a 71, :working:,if replaceing the rear anyways ,,that part will be the same money,,or close anyways,,the front will require a few pieces to make it work,,and any grill is exspensive,,its all in what you want in the end,,your the driver,,no matter what it will have good value if to sell, :dogpile:

havent got a good start on the cuda to make a list,,i know you need a 70 model header panel for the grill to work,,on the cuda,,that one piece supports the whole grill an headlight bezels and so forth, valance,,,,the difference on the marker lights is the opening,,on my front fenders i was able to cut out were the 72 marker lights  and made the marker lights fit off a 70,takes a cut cutting tool and the tool that can crimp the edge were the housing fits,,now thats a challenger not a cuda, havent tried yet but will be soon i hope,, ,,i replaced my  complete quarter panels on mine so i just used the 70 style quarters..then i replaced the rear panel for the tail lights,,then of course you need the tail light assemblys and the marker lights for a 70 ,,and also a 70 grill for front all light houseings and assemblys and the hood latch assembly is different and fender turn signals and most of the outer chrome trim moulding  for the true look but most are so close on all yrs that it doesnt make difference unless you go for complete detail,,and on a cuda the bumpers may be different but not sure yet  :dunno: and on a challenger i had to swap the wiring harness for the rear lights,,but it was a simple swap as the plug was the same on the end bulk end connection,,the front harness may have to be swaped on a cuda, :dunno: of course the interior is another parts list,,
