Crossmember Torsion Bar
« on: August 18, 2009 - 12:12:11 AM »
Apparently, the previous owner welded in a piece of steel.  Maybe he lost the cross member and was in a hurry. :clueless:  I'm not sure what to do.  Should I try cutting it out or is that crazy?  Should I replace the crossmember?  How hard would that be and is it something I should attempt?  Help please.

If you are looking for originality I would definitely remove. Carefully cut the extra panel leaving the weld on the cross member, grind off the weld and then check to make sure that no other damage is present.

I'd check the rest of the original crossmember near the torsion bar sockets, and if it seems to be a little on the thin side, I'd replace the entire crossmember.  I just got done removing one while leaving the floorpans untouched, and it is not an easy job.  I have about 10 hours of labor in it right now and still have to clean, prime and weld in the new crossmember then seam seal.

New Goodmark repro crossmember is $399.00 at most places I have seen.

I have the same torsion bars for $235.00 everyday on my site.  If you want one, I believe it is one of the best deals you will find.
I have lots of other parts and I always try to have very reasonable prices.

Thanks,

Daniel

there is a difference in years, what year is yours?  will depends on the trans mount x-member , the bolt spacing is different, either way both are now available.
