thanks for posting...    brakecleaner is used a lot where I work.  I have been complaining for years about the smell when I`m welding and someone in the shop is using that stuff... the smell just makes me wanna run away.
I forwarded the article to my boss... I hope he will listen to me now.     :2thumbs:

well... missed that.   I don`t know what was written but it might be helpfull to me convicing my boss to get that stuff out of the construction shop where I work.  I asked him several times to do so ,but he keeps telling me they just need it there.  Next time I smell it I`m out of there...  :2cents:   even if it`s used 200ft away from where I work it still makes me wanna run when the fumes burn from my weldingtorch...

Everyone should watch what they use because if you mix some things and use them on some metals they can cause a lot of problems.   :2cents:

Any florinated (or is it chlorinated?) hydrocarbon (freon for example) when heated can produce phozgene gas. I know I spelled it wrong. I work with a lot of solvents and cleaners in my job. Nasty stuff. I am glad the guy wasn't killed. Always be careful!! :2thumbs:

I remember phosgene gas being a big concern back in my Navy submarine days. The concern is if we had a freon leak in an AC unit and fire at the same time in the closed up submarine. If someone was found that was suspected of being overtaken by phosgene gas we were told to stand the person on their head. Reason being, phosgene is much heavier than air and gravity would supposedly  cause the gas to leave the lungs.
The reason you don't hear of more people being affected by this gas is because it is so heavy. As soon as the gas is generated it typically falls to the floor immediately.

Holy cow, what an eye opener. We use brake clean all the time at work and the torch comes out now and then. So I guess I shouldn't be using it as a torch to kill wasps huh? Lol, I don't think the new blend even burns like the old stuff did a couple years ago. I do use it by itself to kill wasp nests in my yard. It's interesting, because the newer blends (does anyone know what they changed about it?) kill the wasps, but it takes about 10 seconds for them to expire. With the old blend, it was instant death. I had a huge nest a couple years ago under my deck with about a hundred paper wasps on it. I went over with a can in each hand and hit em. It was like a large clump simultaneously falling to the ground dead. Those that barely got hit flew for a second or two before hitting the ground. I just had to kill three nests in my 71 Javelin when I was mowing last week. Got stung before I realized they were there.

Consumer products come with 4 "levels" of hazard warnings on the labels.

No warning -- anything that poses no danger to humans when contacted by skin, eyes, inhalation, or ingestion.

"Caution"  --  mildly hazardous.

"Warning" --  Could be life threatening in certain circumstances

"Danger"  --  The worst of the worst.  Think lye or gasoline.  Poisons.

All consumer chemical type products have one of these 4 warnings on their labels.  These are required by law.  It pays to read them and it might help you understand the potential hazards these products contain.....     :2cents:

Boy, the Navy thought that through.

Put their head where the dangerous gas will surely be.
