'72 Tail Light Assemblies
« on: August 19, 2009 - 03:11:56 PM »
I am repainting the tail light assemblies for my '72.  I believe the backs of the assembly were just natural color from the factory, is this true?  If so, what would you reccomend I do to mine?  They are currently sprayed black from over spray but I am going to strip the black off.  Do I just leave them unfinished or should I spray them with something like aluminum paint or cast gray?

I would say that it depends on how original you want the car.

I would strip the black paint off but try not to scratch the housing.  What I mean is don't use a putty knife and scrape against the housing.  Then take some very fine steel wool and use that to clean everything up.  You shouldn't need to paint them if they are in good shape.

The steel wool trick also works for fuel filler knecks.  The plating process for the filler knecks is illegal now so it can't be reapplied.  Steel wool will clean it up nice.

One final word on the tail light housings.  Please refinish them with the correct argent and organisol black like the factory used.  :2cents: I only saw 2 cars that were done correctly at this years Mopar Nationals.
