calling all 1970 challenger experts come on in
« on: August 21, 2009 - 02:37:12 AM »
Many of u know I'm cloning a 1974 challenger into a 1970 so far ice done the following. But would like to
know what else i'm missing. I'm starting to think this was more than I wanted to do since 70 parts are expensive but it's just one thing after another.

1. Changed the grill from 74 to 70
2. Changed the side markers 74 to 70
3. Got 70 front n rear bumpers and brackets
4. Got correct 70 hood (rally)
5. Got correct hood latch and hood safety latch 70
6. Changed rear end panel with 70 lights
7. Got the 70 parking lock linkage (locks shifter when no key)

what else do I need?  I have rallye gauges for 72-74 but with a k tach and I also have a console with an ashtray so o know that's wrong and I have seat belts (3 point) so those need to go. I'm thinking of stopping but if u saw this car what would u think?
Thanks for the help I don't know if I should stop where I'm at or finish what i started
oh n I have the wrong motor a 360. I started to have second thoughts when the  steering column(70)  sold for 405 on eBay

when i cloned mine i left the interior for a 72 but if you wish to change that ,the dash pad has challenger embroried so to speak on to the pad instead of a little plastic plate..the headliner is 5 bow instead of 4,,the 70 rallye gauges have the reset knobs for speedo and clock thru the woodgrain part instead of thru the clear lenses like 72 and up,,the seats have a different grain pattern as well as different seat foams on the front are different,,those are the biggest things that i know of,,and you said you bought a 70 grill,,for the headlights you need the backing plates that weld to the fenders so you can put your headlight buckets in,,and the hood release latch itself (not the safty latch) is different,,and the marker lights and holes on the sheet meatal are different

There are a lot of parts that are 1970 only.

You would be better off trying to find a 1970 car if you like them that much better, you are going to drive yourself crazy if you try & convert everything.  :2cents:

I believe you need the front fenders c/w the headlight buckets. Did you also get the headlight surround trims as they are unique to 70 as well? Gets expensive to do what you are doing.

You have covered everything that most people would look at like the grille, tail, marker lights. Anything else is just icing on the cake. Lots of 70-71 cars with the wrong style rallye gauges, no big deal at all. The later (72-74) rallye hood should be the same as the 70 in that DODGE is once again lettered out on the front of the hood. (71 has Dodge on the grille so they did not have it on the hood also). I would not start splitting hairs on the little stuff, just build it and enjoy.

Did anyone mention the door mirrors?  The 70 only mirrors have smaller bases.

console top plate has 4 screws instead of 5 , the hood latch support brace has welded tabs for the bolts instead of the speed clips , rear valence has bolt on supports instead of being welded to the valence , auto shifter is a ball type instead of the T type used for later years , antenna is a pull up type instead of the i piece mast , , right inner fender is unique to 70 , front buckets have a unique latch release to flip them forward & hard backs , , the list is almost endless !!

No one has mensioned that the 3 piece tail trim is a 70 only item.  The 70's are smooth and the 71-74 pieces have an accent line on them.  If that is something you are going to replace, call Mike at BE&A.  He has great looking and fitting tail trim.

E-brake cables were different too.  70's didn't use an intermediate cable like the 71-74's...  73-74 also used a larger spindle.  The bearings were larger on the newer modles...door latches were a 70 only item too...
