Stock Carb
« on: August 22, 2009 - 08:25:46 PM »
I have a '72 Challenger Rallye, with the 340 and the stock 4 barrel on it.  The carb is looking pretty rough and isn't running that great.  What I'm getting at is should I replace it with an after market or should I have it rebuilt by a professional?  Is it hard to find someone who can work on these?  Stuck at a crossroads not sure what to do with this one.

Thanks,

Yes it's hard to find someone to rebuild a Thermoquad. They are good carbs but unless your dead set on originality an aftermarket Holley or Edelbrock would make life easier for you.
Actually the rebuild process is easy, it's the tuning it to perform it's best that's a pain.

If you want it done right these guys are the ones

If you are careful and organized, rebuilding isn't that bad.  Several years ago I got a rebuild kit for mine at Autozone for $20.  You may still be able to find it locally.

When I got my car, the car ran bad, felt almost like the tranny was slipping or else the carb was bad.  Hit the gas and it felt like the engine was revving but not going anywhere.  After the rebuild it ran great and could light up the tires!     :burnout:

The Thermoquad I had on my old 318 was the least trouble of any carb I ever had. The "adjustments" I had to make were the idle mixture and the dashpot to get the secondaroes to open right. 1.8X 60 foot times with a stock convertor with a low compression 318 and 109mph trap speeds. It'll work as good or better than anything you can buy.  :2cents:

I just had the EXACT same problem (I think you answered mine?). Totally can feel like the tranny (tho mine was down a bit). It was the first carb I ever rebuilt (even had to fix a crack in the phenolic body!) and it was easy enough to do it again today in about 2 hours(complete teardown) to check and re-clean everything. Now it runs great and idles too!
I got my rebuild kit at NAPA.

How do I find out what carb model I have?  On the top of the carb it say Carter Thermoquad and next to that it has 6- and then circled it has 2080.  When I look online I don't see anything that resembles this number.  I'm trying to find a rebuild kit to potentially do this myself, not sure if I have near the knowledge level to pull this off without completely hosing myself.  I'm a rookie so I need honest advise if I should attempt this.  The last carb I rebuilt was on a dirtbike about 15 years ago.

I believe the number is stamped on the baseplates on Carter carbs.

:iagree:  It's on the drivers side rear at the bottom.... From what I've seen there are a couple of kits that do most all of them... May not be critical if your sure it's an OE from that era.

You can find rebuild kits on Ebag if you can't get one locally.

I am sure you can do it. pretty easy to rebuild if you follow the instructions. as stated before, tuning is the tricky part.

I'll tell you what, it's gettin' to be that season...kids are back in school, tourist are flocking out of here.  If you seriously want a vaction down here I can do some research and see what's going on.  Regardless of the carb help, I'd be more than happy to look in to it.

G-, We will be coming to the Gulf Coast some time in the next few weeks, if the wife has her way. She researched Santa Rosa, Gulf Breeze a while back & could not find anything available for less then $250 a day... We usually stay at Orange Beach but are looking for a change.
If you know of anything drop a name & we will look into it.  I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks

In my area you have Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach (where I live), Fort Walton Beach, and then Destin.  You're probably familiar with all of these areas, I'd be more than happy to look into some prices for you and let you know.  Just don't let me forget, I'm a pilot I get distracted very easily.
