Mod Top Hemi Cuda
« on: August 22, 2009 - 08:48:50 PM »
Anyone see the Dec 2009 issue of Mopar Action yet? (Why the heck are they sending me December already) In it is an article on the only 1970 Mod Top Hemi Cuda. That in itself is crazy, but what grabbed me was that it was a 70 ModTop period. According to the article, there were 17 1970 Cudas built that were ordered with this top. A lot of people I've talked to said that they didn't even offer a mod in 70. I knew better. I saw one of these in a backyard in derelict condition when I was a teen back in the 80's. This was before I was into Mopars. I was heavily into Mustangs at the time. I was driving through a major city in Maryland and saw this car a couple of times in the backyard of a house. I didn't even know what a mod top was, I just thought it was crazy that someone had put a floral pattern roof on "that old Mopar." I guarantee it was an e-body Cuda even before I was into Cudas. I remember the shape and the roof because it was so unusual. I'm sure the car is gone now because it was pretty visible, so I haven't checked in 20 something years. I just feel vindicated to the naysayers who told me that I couldn't have seen what I thought I saw because it was an e-body and therefore, apparently a 70. I just think it's cool that I saw one in the wild at one time. Anyone else ever see one?

I know it's rare, but that is one UGLY car!  Floor mats really add to the look.   :22yikes:

The only  "Mod Top" Mopar I ever saw in person was a 70 Fury III.  Boy that was a lot of ugly vinyl!

There was a Mod Top '69 Barracuda in our little Kansas town. It was a big Sonny & Cher thing. We also had  19 year old girl with a Lime Green Superbird.    I remember my mom saying as we went into the grocery store, "That's the ugliest car I've ever seen!"  The bottom of the nosecone was all scaped up from the girl hitting things.   :grinno:

This thought may not be politically correct, but is an opinion offered. It may be correct? or it may be wrong? It is not designed to appease those needing shelter from the real world.

Yeah, its the same car with a full article in Mopar Action. I thought that it was odd that they showed that little pic and mention of it in MCG and then nothing else. What a tease. This guy bought a one owner, little old lady Cuda time capsule to rip apart to restore the Hemi.

They were even available in two versions;

That Tortoise Grain would look pretty cool, but if 'm reading it right it was only for the Fury?

Yep, Fury two door hardtops only.

I have always wanted to do a white Superbird convertible clone with the blue mod material & interior myself.  :bigsmile:

In the Summer of 1969, my Dad, who was manager of Chrysler's soft trim operations, got a '69 Chrysler 300 convertible assigned car.  Light blue metallic with dark blue vinyl buckets.  Took it in to Detroit Trim and had the seat inserts and top boot done in the Mod Blue trim. Looked pretty good.  I'll see if I can find a picture.

I saw a Green (70?) Dart in the Detroit area once, when I was on the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour several years ago.

I also saw a Gold C-Body with a Yellowish/Gold mod on it years ago.

We (Supercar Collectibles) were told of the Juliano car back in April (?) by Rob Wolf of MCG, at the Indy Cylinder Head Chrysler Performance Trade Show & Swap Meet (great event). Rob said he was going to shoot it the next day, and shared the info with us. I think it's kind of funny he shoots it in April, teases readers in August, when Mopar Action runs a whole article on the car. I must admit when I heard Yellow top on Green car I thought... :faint:

This has been posted in another thread but here goes again (if you haven't seen it in 1:18 scale)...

We should have them available in late October.  :drool:
