Does the second hand tick each second or is it smooth like the old clocks?

I believe it ticks. That's the only way you can tell the difference. Just like a Rolex and a Bolex.

it is definatly different from the original
, I thought the new ones were smooth movemnet & the original jumped

Mine was redone with my rallye cluster and it seems to run and keep time great.

Actually I think you are correct. I know it is one or the other, and that they are different. I'm out of town so I can't verify it, but the new quartz does keep excellent time, and draws very little voltage.

My cluster was rebuilt 4 months back and I just put it in and I thought it should go tick tick tick and it just runs smoth sorta it will stop every 30 min or so then I have to tap it to get it to restart.

I got mine from RTE. Electronic and the second hand sweeps continuously (IE no tick tick). Keeps perfect time over weeks down to the minute.

To add... mine doesn't tick either. Just runs smooth as silk. My was done by AutoInstruments in VA.

Mine is quartz and runs smooth. It keeps perfect time too.

To be honest, I haven't seen the kind that ticks, so to speak. I think all the original clocks have probably gone to heaven as the reason. I always look at car shows, and 90% or better have dead clocks.

I've never seen one of these dash clocks from the back side, but mechanical clocks need maintenance. course mechanisms like a large clock should be cleaned and lubricated at least every five years or so. A fine mechanism like a watch should be done every two years or less (like your anti-freeze). The oils dry up and everything just grinds to a halt. I doubt if there are many if any jewels in the movement. And metal bearings don't last for bupkis. Like so often, the machine is blamed when in fact it is the owners poor maintenance at fault.

I understand what you are saying, but I don't think doing maintenance was a priority back then.

Check out this picture. The clock is on the far left. The back side is totally sealed. To really get at the guts, you need to pull off the hands and take out the rivets on the front to open it up. I have never tried because that seems like a PITA, so I sent mine out for the quartz conversion. Maybe others who have done it themselves will say it wasn't such an ordeal.

I did mine myself. It wasnt too bad. It re-uses some pats from the original movement. It even came with a VHS video tape showing you how to do the swap. Not a bad deal for $50
