Transgo TF2 Shift Problems
« on: August 24, 2009 - 06:49:16 AM »
I have a 1973 Cuda 340 727 trans. with TF2 kit.

The problem I am having has to do with 1-2 shift point on WOT. I hit 6500 rpm before it shifts to 2nd. Normal driving is perfect. I have adjusted the throttle kickdown linkage for 1-2 at 10mph and 2-3 at about 25mph. The bands are adjusted correctly, fluid level proper, I did everything the kit instructions required.  Is it possible the throttle pressure valve in the valve body could cause this? I know when I was doing the kit the retainer on the TP valve was set 6 turns in but transgo wants the retainer flush all the way out. I am just trying to figure this out and could use some help, thanks in advance!

Mike

You mean the pressure regulator valve adjustment, right? If so,yes it could make it worse.

Did you grind the TV valve stem off as in the instructions? (step 3 in these OD instructions)

Yes, sorry, I meant pressure regulator valve. Yes I did grind the throttle valve end to 9/32". I installed the yellow spring on the throttle valve and blue spring on PR valve. Then I backed off the spring seat 6 turns to make flush against the retainer. I am convinced this is were my problem may lie. They say this is correct for streetable cars but I don't know. I am not sure how this affects the line pressure and shifting under WOT.

I think you need to back off the kickdown adjustment more.

I have tried shortening and lengthening and does change shift points but not under WOT. ( still goes to 6500 rpm from 1-2) I have the single rod type of throttle kickdown, is there any special adjustment to make at the tranny. I tried setting with throttle wide open and rod all the way back at tranny, and I tried setting with rod all the way forward and throttle at rest ( choke off ).  I am starting to think I might not be getting full travel from front to back at tranny connection.

I just went and looked at the throttle linkage and everything seems ok. I have a holley 650 VS with the chrysler throttle extension lever P/N 20-7. There is not much else too look at here as I am getting response shortening and lengthing the rod as far as shift points under normal driving. Still no effect on the 1-2 shift. I am at a loss.

I am also not getting positve response from the shifter from 1-2 and 2-3 when manually shifting. There is a slight delay with both shifts.

Dex 3 is fine. Maybe you just need to adjust your shifter then.

Adjusted shifter and working perfectly. Checked travel of throttle lever at tranny and goes front to back on stops correctly. Why the delay in upshift from 1-2? I'm baffled.

No, I didn't want the shift command feature.

OK,that would have made it worse. Let me think about this for a while and I will get back to you.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. It's funny because everything works perfectly for normal driving.

OK,I am thinking you could try clipping a 1/2 coil off the 1-2 shift valve spring.
