Charcoal Canister?
« on: August 24, 2009 - 10:06:25 PM »
When I brought my 72 Rallye the motor was rebuilt in March.  When I test drove it ran fine, idled high, but got up and went with no hesitation.  The guy I brought it from said that it needed a good tunning since none was done after the rebuild...according to him.  I had to do major front end work on it any way so I thought that would be no big deal to do this as well.  Long story longer, as I got into the engine compartment I soon learned that only one of the lines coming out of the charcoal canister were hooked up to anything and the charcoal was falling out of the bottom because the bottom filter sheet was shot.  Is this thing even necessary?  Are there steps to bypassing it or should I refurb this thing and get it hooked up right?  Any thoughts would be great.

If Your keeping the Thermoquad it hooks up easy enough, two rubber tubes & one to the gas tank. The last time I checked the canister filter was still available for a couple of bucks. If your changing carbs I'd just leave it connected to the tank & cap the other two outlets & let it serve as your tank vent.

I agree with Bullit - I have mine hooked up to the TQ and all is good - I wanted it as stock as possible though...

What's the best way to clean these things up?  I have a little rust discoloration on the canister where the mounting strap touched it.  I'd also like it looking new so it doesn't stick out like a soar thumb in a fresh engine comp.  Can it be lightly wet sanded and then polished?  I also have a white part# that is stamped onto the top of it that I would like to keep.

Mine is still hooked up but when I looked at it, it is so old that the insides are completely gone.  lol  Guess it's not really necessary . . . .  :icon16:

use Limeaway or CLR to remove the rust.... Any plastic polish should work, if you need to sand use very light paper 800 or 1200 grit wet.

Where did you find those products?  I have the canister but the charcoal all dumped out when I took it out.  Plus the braket/strap bent to crap when I was taking it out, due it being old and froze from never being touched in 37 years.  Have a schematic to how is all supposed to hook up?

Thanks a lot for all the help,

I looked up those filters at Rockauto   If your charcoal is falling out the inside must be compromised in some way, I have never been in one but next time I run across my canister I'll see what I can find out.   Bulk activated charcoal used to be available for aquariums, I'm sure there are plenty of sources.

Wages and I have some of the same issues. The bottom cover of mine easily pops off., probably due to 2 small cracks and a little warping. I have to look at it in depth to assess a livable solution.
No one reproduces the cannisters, or lids, so we will have to create a solution that will be "easy" :grinno: to replicate.
Hint-Hint: I intend on getting this part scanned so I can create a workable lid.
As far as the cannister finish, I agree with the previous suggestions. CLR, or plastic polish. I use the coarser 3 M stuff to start, the the fiber lens polish.
The brackets should be pretty resilient- even if you warp them, you should be able to bend them back. I just bead blasted mine.
Wages had a great idea- the charcoal "chips" could be replaced with fish filter charcoal...

I have one question- How do I hook this up to my edelbrock 650?

Thanks,
Dan

Alright I got the charcoal from WalMart, and the filter from Auto Zone, now the big question does this thing open?  I got all the old charcoal out and the fiberglass filter out, but I can't get inside to manipulate the screens.  Before I break it I figured I'd ask the pros.

Thanks,

Dug out mine... There are concentric circles of plastic with a foam filter just below the replaceable fiber filter... I see no ready way to remove, apparently the innards are pressed in & held by tension. I see evidence of threads or adhesives.

I know it's been awhile on this topic but I'm getting her back together...slowly.  Here's the problems I've run into, the cannister has 4 lines out of the top I have the bowl vent and fuel tank line figured out, where I am stumped is the PCV and DIST VAC lines that I don't know where they go to.  Only the fuel tank was hooked up when I brought the car.  Also, the picture that bullitt posted of the carb, the front of my carb is different than mine, I only have one stem the big one only, not two like in the picture.  Basically the one maked "little" in the picture does not exist on my carb.  Suggestions would be awesome.  There are two on the back, on the same reference line, on the bottom, under the fuel line hookup.

Thanks,

My Manual & Challenger are '73...you show to have a '72, no illustrations of a 4-port canister.  :dunno:

Never made it to the beach....maybe next year
