Can add-a-leafs be added without pulling the whole rearend/springs out of the car?

i keep running into guys at shows runnin gair shocks on a-bodies and they love them......I have read though that the ebodies cross members may not be able to hold up to air shocks...but then someone chimes in that have them for a long time with no issues.... :clueless:

Air shocks would certainly be the quickest fix.

Air shocks can ruin the cross member, they give a bad ride if pumped up much.
You do have to take the springs off to add the simple add-a-leaf... a good afternoons work + you probably will need new U-bolts.

Why would someone do this?
For better cornering manners, some people elect to try and get the car as low as possible. Ground clearance of course comes into play but it is one way to lower the centre of gravity.

I aint never taken the rear end out of a car, or disassembled leafs...so My guess is an all weekend job....LOL

Of course I never installed a tranny before, and I got this far with the car.

Sure would be nice to get some stance back and stop the axle from hitting the exhaust, etc....and gain some stance.

Just wondering, though...If you add add-a-leafs, and one side is initially lower, will that level it out, or just raise both springs and still have the right side lower in the rear?  Figured air-shocks you can adjust each one.....Dont want to ruin the frame though...

I suppose you could still be cockeyed.....but you've got a bad housing to so you may be taking it apart anyway.... Drop coin on a new set of ESPO springs if you can't afford to be wrong   :poopoke:

Chryco,

Any chance you could lay out the steps you took?  I have never done it before....I think I can figure it out, but experience is always better....also, keep in mind I would probably be doing this solo....although I do have airtools.

ALso, when you say you have them made up....can you explain the specs, etc?  WIll this leaf give me more lift as well or just get the stocks back to "normal"? WIll these leafs make the rear level again?

we just added 1 full lenght leaf under the main leaf , had them made at a local spring shop , not sure on the Arc
jack up the car , use stands under the frame ,undo or cut off the U bolts , raise the diff off the spring , remove the fold over spring clamps , undo or cut the center bolt , install a new center bolt slide the new leaf up to the main leaf , install all the original leafs onto use a C clamp to hold the leafs togther , do up the center bolt , reinstall the shock plate & U bolts , re-install the fold over clamps at least on the front of the spring , tighten everything & recheck after a few miles

So did you disconnect brake lines or unbolt the springs from the frame?

Cool...thats good news.

I have to look back in the threads and see if I can find the part number for the add-a-leafs that someone used.....I think they were pre-made for a SUV or pickup but turn out to be the perfect arch etc.

For the spring center bolts, anything special there or just grade 8 from the hardware store?
