Plug indexing or multiple electrodes? Your opinion...
« on: August 26, 2009 - 05:45:37 PM »
What do yall think? Is indexing a single electrode plug better than having multiple electrodes? (such as the Bosch Platinum 4+). Just curious of everyones opinions.

From everything I've read, the multiple electrodes do NOTHING to help with horse power. You are paying for nothing. Go Old School.   :naughty:

I use an MSD 7al box and HVC coil to fire the plugs, and got a "one race" set of NASCAR Delphi plug wires.

Might be over kill but plugs stay nice and clean all the time.

I use the exhaust heat on the intake too and have no vapor lock starting problems. You would think it has nothing to do with it but on my last jet change with the new Carter carbs I did notice that evening after the motor cool and I took the tops off the carbs the fuel level was 50% too low. So the hot carbs are giving off heavy vapors but motor starts quick everytime all the time.

What do you mean by using the exhaust heat on the intake?

He doesn't block the exhaust crossover in the intake? Makes it warm up faster. Most people think it gets too hot and causes vapor lock.

As a last ditch effort indexing plugs will yield results, if and only if by soem odd chance all of your plugs ended up facign the wrong way. Side gapping can give you a little too. But IMO thesea re a little bit for the work required with every plug change. So I dont do it. Side gapping and indexing will give more power. How much depends on how bad you are from the get go. On mutiple electrodes... They work on rotaries where the rpms are 10K. More elctrodes lead to more shrouding of the spark in EVRY case and that is never good for power. They are all gimics and they have been around since internal combustion engines came to be.

An old trick was to grind back the earth electrode so it's end sat half way over the centre electrode, that gave a more exposed spark and was supposed to add for better burning, I have done this but never checked results on dyno's, plugs tended to need checking more regulary but as I only did it on the race cars that wasn't a problem.   :burnout:
NGK have a "V" groove spark plug which works well, that is all I use in my daily rides and fit to customers cars.

Yes and up here in Michigan summer is over already. High mid 60's today. After a a drive the carbs are cool to the touch from all the cool air going through them. Seems like only in very warm weather 80+ that intake exhaust heat is too much, most other times its more helpful than harmful. Raw unburnt fuel will wash away the oil for the piston rings and cause higher amounts of wear.

On WOT in cool weather the air goes through the intake so fast it does not have much time to heat up.

Now if I lived like in say Texas, I would block the intake exhaust heat.

I have found the cost of the plug is directly relative to performance , the more expensive the plug the more power ti will cost you

The important thing for a plug is that it fires and the porcelin doesn't disintegrate and fall into the cylinder.  :2thumbs:

Well Dodgefreak, I do live in Texas. It was 105 day before yesterday so that would explain why I have never heard about using the exhaust gases.

Yep, no need for intake exhaust heat in 105 degree heat  :smilielol:

Aussie - That's the side gapping I mentionned before. Incidently, I use NGK race V grooves on the important engines. Everything else gets Autolites...lol.
