Typically witha good cam choice you can get into the 9.7:1 range on pump fuel without detonation as long as you have a closed chamber head or a quench piston which it sounds like you have

Is there a chance you could post a pic of the manifolds? The plain '65 logs (non performance) are restrictive. The factory hi-po units are not nearly as bad as many think. Inany event, you are not reduced to stock parts should you go with a stock log manifold. The cam looks like an XE268 which is a good cam for your build regardless of exh manifold or header. Any dual plane will also work on the engine. I would not bother with a single of any kind. If you want (and your builder feels better) step down one size in the XE line to the XE262 or go with the SUmmit grind small cam. I dont think you'l go wrong either way.

Those are the high performance manifolds. They flow exteremely well for factory manifolding and I think your engine guy is used to working with GM or Ford products. They will not scavenge like a header will, and you do give up some power without using them. But it's wasy to make good use of them through the cam choice. I wouldn't bother with headers on a mild build. You certainly dont NEED to, and you're not giving up much on a mild package running them.

Thanks for the info on the manifolds

Putting the 440 on the dyno in a couple weeks and trying to gather some parts for power comparison.

have several carbs
the stock exhaust manifold and some long tube headers
trying to locate different intakes
going to try the stock 1978 cast intake first

What do you guys think of these intakes?

440 4 brl intake, 1968 stock, part # 2806178. $50.
Edelbrock alum dual plane intake for a RB, part # S.P.2-P.440 $75
Edelbrock T.M.7 single plane intake, for a RB, like new, never bolted on a motor. $150.

the 440 dyno went a little unexpected.
the motor was supposed to run on pump gas (89 octane) but we had to keep adding 110oct until we had about 50/50 to keep the knock sensor from going crazy.

What compression do you think the motor is if you need to run 100 octane?

dyno showed 374.5 p and 492 tq

without quench & under load I have seen detonation in the low 9:1 range
was that on a wheel dyno ??

dyno showed 374.5 p and 492 tq       You just created a 1968/71 stock hp 440 engine with those specs/  Add a six pack and go for 390 hp

If you can post the dyno sheet and a very detailed list of parts used we can figure it out.
