Mystery Sound...and Light?
« on: August 05, 2004 - 10:07:47 AM »
OK guys...on top of the no radio reception and poor grounding with my front turn signal lights, we now have an audible click sound eminating from the heater control panel area.  At regular (appr) 10 second intervals  there is a click sound and the heater control instrument light goes on. Followed by a second click ten seconds later and then the light goes off.  This just cycles over and over until the ignition is shut off.  Seems to pull the ammeter over pretty good when it cycles. WITW is going on with this click/light? Nothing else seems to be effected except the other panel lights dim a little when the light cycles off. Anybody want to take a stab at this one? :-\ ???

I think that the clicking sound is coming from the headlight switch- something is shorting out causing it to click or something is drawing power thur the lighting circuit itself causing the problem.

my best stab is that there is a poor/none ground from the battery to the frame!

Interesting. I had a Grand Prix back in the 80's. One morning on the way to work, I hear clicking coming from the rear defroster switch, or so it seemed. I just turned it off, and went on my merry way. After work my car wouldn't start. No engine turning, no nothing. It turned out to be my "-" battery cable was loose. So my problem was a weak, or intermittant ground. That probably applies here too. The clicking is some kind of arching going on. If it were a wire against the ground(body), I wouldn't think there would be a pattern to it as far as clicking goes. Are you sure the sound isn't from the light switch panel? Does it happen regardless if the lights are on or off? The fact that the lights dim, and ampmeter takes a dive, means excessive current is going somewhere. As a last resort, you can remove one fuse at a time, start the car, and see if the problem goes away. That would at least narrow the problem to a specific circuit. Keep us updated.
