Fuel overflowing at the gas station

Anyone else hate it when this happens. Happens to me every time, and I spend a couple minutes using their dirty water to clean it up. Imagine its easier to avoid, but worse when it happens with a Challenger than a Cuda, but its a mess anyways.
I'm expecting the black organisol paint around the filler to start peeling off soon.

Very annoying, happens to me about half the time. Does it overflow with the first click-off or if you try to put more gas in after the first cutoff?

I find that the automatic cutoff doesn't work when refueling my Challenger.
I try to have a rough idea how much gas it will take, then when I get there I finish fueling very carefully.  I probably look sort of strange to other people at the gas station when I am standing there hunched over with my ear near the filler opening listening for the sound of the gas starting to fill up the filler tube!!!

I try the same things but its not easy getting it in time. It comes up fast and it pours about a cup out the neck before it shuts off. Then, today, I carefully put about another gallon or two in it to get it to the top, just to see how much it takes. All the manuals say 18 gallons, but others on here say less. I'm sure with all the sender and pickup issues many people seem to have, it has a couple unuseable gallons in it.

I've started putting rag under the filler tube of the Cuda to catch those dribbles before they hit the paint.

The larger nozzles on leaded pumps didn't have that problem; its having to use the smaller unleaded nozzles, which expect to fit through the restrictor plate that isn't present on our cars (or my Dad's old truck, which had the same issues).  The same thing can happen when I fill a NATO jerry can with unleaded (but there I just pump to 5 gallons and stop).

I suppose you could cannibalize an unleaded restrictor plate and install it into the filler pipe of your car; worst case it would probably baffle most of the slosh overflow even if the nozzle still didn't trip off.  But then you couldn't use a standard jerry can spout to put gas in your car if you ever needed to; you'd have to use a weenie small unleaded nozzle stiff and long enough to get through the restrictor.

I have also started carrying extra towels to wrap the nozzle. I also have found that here in Tennessee the unleaded nozzles have the rubber cup at the base of the nozzle and will form a descent seal while filling. The last 2 fillups have been burp free, knock on wood.

Weve got the rubber cups that fit over the opening too. They're to catch vapors I think. Dies anyone know of a rubber fold out that fits snug around the filler, and folds out to act as a barrier against spills? It just would roll out over the bumper and keep tha gas off the car.
I think I've seem something like that for challengers, but it would be better for cudas cause most the time it would just be folded up behind the license plate.
Heck, I can just make one out of rubber myself. Cut a hole to fit the filler snug, about 9" long and 6" wide. Done.

On the Challengers I have had, they always spit back using the nozzle normally. But if I turned the nozzle upside down (hose pointing up) no problems. It looks goofy but it always worked for me.

The rubber accessory sounds like a starter business. 

I'd buy one...see already one sale!!!!!!!!!

simple enough. One of my 30 minute jobs this afternoon.
Loosen the top 2 screws, remove the other two. Cut the rubber matting to fit snug around the pipe, insert. tighten down and...voila!
I think slotted rubber like the piece of mat I had around will work best to channel the fuel down.
Might look a little tacky, but who'll notice besides me?

Nice job with the "flap", I'll have to fab up something symilar for the 'Cuda.

If you want real excitment at the pumps try fueling a Pantera that hasn't been converted to an external inlet. 12" away from a hot motor and hotter headers. Hand feed all the way.

It's happened to me too, annoying! Even worse having to use their 3x3" tissues to clean up your paint job lol. I used to have tissues ready, people probably thought I was a clean, show car, freak lol. Since then, I have found that by placing the nozzle of the hose 1/2 way in works a treat. It's safe and won't fall out, holds it's own pressure. Works well, give it a try.

That works the best for me as well, that and holding the boot back (if you have vapor recovery nozzles on your pump) and watching when it gets close.
