TorqueFlite OR PowerGlide for my 572 HEMI?
« on: August 29, 2009 - 08:28:54 PM »
???  I'm planning on installing a 572 aluminum hemi in my 73 Challenger and want the best automatic for the street.  The car will have 4.10 rear and about 750hp.  I've been hearing that a 'PowerGlide' is the best way to go for durability and I will do that if that's correct.  I was considering the aftermarket Keisler, etc. w/overdrive for some highway economy driving when i do hit the road but I do want something that's gonna hold up over the long run.
I've been out of this scene for over 20 years and just getting back in at 60 so i'm very excited to say the least.
Any help, suggestions, criticism (constructive, of course!) would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

id run the 727, and  keisler makes a great product, so thats not a bad idea either.
im sure their product will serve you well
p. glides are great for light drag cars, i run one in my little weenie race car.
nice smooth, no shock shift.

You have to spend ALOT of money on a 'glide to make them hold up. Alot of aftermarket parts.  :grinyes:

If you put an overdrive in that will most likely be your weak point in the drivetrain.  Your best bet might be to go with 3.54s instead if you are concerned about highway driving.  Otherwise you might not want to pound on it if overdrive is engaged.

You will not be "pounding on it" with overdrive engaged. If you are racing or pounding on it,you will have OD canceled so your RPM's will stay up and you would only use OD for cruising. The 518 can be made to handle anything that a 727 would handle.

I was thinking more about the possibility of driving down the road and someone pulls alongside wanting to race, and forgetting it's in overdrive, or cruising down the highway and jumping on it, but if the 518 is strong enough to handle it, then cool.

At that power level I'd stick with the Torqueflite or something more modern.  The cost of a new beefed up Powerglide and modifications to drop it in will be twice that of the Torqueflite.  It would be total overkill.  That and you only have two gears.  Great for a bracket car, but not so much for any kind of street machine.  Might as well kiss any kind of fuel economy goodbye too.

On the manual front, a Tremec T56 or TR6060 would handle that power, especially if modified.  Not too many other streetable manual transmissions besides that could handle that power reliably, even the TKO-600.

On the auto front, there are many auto transmissions with O/D that could be made to handle it both streetably and reliably.  It really depends what you are looking for, how much work you want to do to get it in, and what you want to spend.

THANKS everyone so far.  Just a note to G-man....the 572 doesn't automaticallly mean i can afford anything.  Lord knows I've been saving $$$$$$ for a really long time and am finally close to having enough doneros!  Everything costs so much but i want to do this right and put the best i can afford in my challenger.  Thanks G-man and all you others for all your helpful info on what to do.  I love reading it.  I hate making decisions.
But, i think i'm on my way.   Thanks again guys!

I heard different. Power Glide for 3000 bucks will handle it no problem vs a manual transmission worth 10 000. So the automatic is a hell of a lot cheaper. If you got money for a 572ci hemi I dont see the problem in getting a good power glide. Cost isnt an issue considering the engine your sticking in and they are designed to handle over 1000hp.

On other hand a Torque flight can handle built propperly up to about 850-950hp after that Power glide is it. :dunno:

You can buy a used Lenco for 3K   :grinyes:

Hey, 'chally'.........How used is the Lenco?  I've been researching their st1200 for a combo street/strip set-up.
