take the rod with the long hole in it loose and turn it in to the right. it may take some trial and error to get it right where you want it.

there are 2 types of kickdowns , the 3 piece pictured & the one piece , you basically need the lickage to push all the way back at full throttle or slightly less to adjust shift points

And don't romp on it until you get it fixed, if the shifts are stacking up, you will burn up the trans running the car hard.

The best thing to do in these situations is to post a pic of YOUR linkage. That way we can see any "problem spots" that need to be changed/modified.

Well,it looks terrible in the first pics ,then looks pretty good in the last with the "extension" on it. You have tried driving it with the extension on it?

I'd look at the basics from the Service Manual (short version)
Kickdown band adjustment  loosen jamb nut, run in adjuster then back out 2 1/2 turns.
Linkage adjustment... With choke disconnected or held open have someone hold the kickdown lever on the tranny all the way forward (or make tool with spring to hold). Loosen kickdown lever adjustment bolt, holding the lever back, adjust the slotted bar forward till is in contact with the carb. stud.

For a test, stick a bolt, nut and a washer in the rear of the slot so that the carb pin starts to move the linkage sooner. Keep sliding it and tightening it forward till you see a difference.

good idea i think that is what MEK was tryin to show me ... now that i look at his pic and put what yer post said together it makes sense... however if i can get it to shift right with the bolt nutwasher idea that tells me somethin is still not right ... since that is factory linkage off of somethin and alot of the parts have changed ( intake and carb) does that mean the factory linkage probably wont ever be right??  i was  thinking of puttin one of those cables on anyways eventually.... i am jus wondering if i am missing pieces or if that is just the way it is with modifications???

I had to put the bolt to work in mine.  Used to shift very quick before 10 MPH too. Now from 1 to 2 at about 15 mph and into 3rd at about 40 unless I have the pedal pushed a lot more........
