e-brake spring picture wanted
« on: September 01, 2009 - 07:48:51 AM »
Does anyone have a picture of the return spring from the emergency brake setup? And maybe one of how it is connected?

I have the remains of my spring but its missing a piece...and no idea where it connects up under there....

Thanks guys.

Are you referring to the spring on the pedal assembly?

I contacted SMS Mopar asking them if I could buy just a spring...well, they said "no".

They said they buy cores jsu so they can get parts like the springs....for their own rebuilds.

Go figure.... :dunno:

Take a picture of what isn't working on yours and I'll tell you how to make it work.
I've had to fix a few of my parking brakes and they all work now.

Which one, the release handle return spring or the pedal pull spring?

That is a later model one. Get a spring from the hardware store the same diameter as your old one. Straighten out the end to make it the same length. It hooks to a hole right above it. If you have the 70 assembly with a little clamp to hold the brake cable instead of just a hole, the spring isn't on the bottom.

Thanks.....great picture.....still tough to see where the long end conects  :swear:  But this will help.

The unit I have is the one with the spring, as the springs was actually hanging from the one spot when I got the car,

I tried finding the right spring at the hardware store...no luck.....plus, I have found you cant bend spring steel...it will just break when you try....or fatigue to the point where it will break not long after....

I have bent spring steel by heating till red hot with a propane torch.. I'm talking garage door helper springs so that little dude should be no problem...hint turn the torch low for the most heat.

A spring that small will bend easily without using heat. Just use 2 pairs of pliers.     I've changed many springs in my life.

You didn't try it yet did you?

Well, I tried bending a brake shoe return spring...actually two of them.....on my Durango (long story).....first tried bending it.....SNAP!....Then heated it and bent it.....worked great til it had any tension on it and it crumbled.

I have tried bending springs before and had little success except for very light throttle springs, etc.

I havent tried it yet on this particular application because I havent found a spring yet that is close to being the right dimensions...

Those drum brake springs I don't mess with. That's a different temper rating.

I'm going to the hardware store today. I'll find one that works for you, bend it up to match mine then send it to you if you don't find one that works.
