SE Overhead Consolette Fuel Light

OK I give up-  ??? If you have wired an SE before- can you help.   ;) :D  See the diagram below.  We were checking all our dash wires, and we noticed two Dark Blue wires for Fuel.  One from the Sending Unit - G4, the other from the Low Fuel Relay - G4A.  The Blue sending unit one was on the "DBL" post while the black jumper for the other guages was on the right post.  How do we get the Fuel Relay blue connector to read the output of the Fuel Guage to trip the relay to power up the overhead light?  Do we we use the black ground jumper post assuming ground is enabled further in the circuit? One diagram in the service manual has both the Sending Unit AND the Fuel Relay connected to what looks like the two posts.  But its not clear.  Another diagram has it with just the Sending Unit.  (doesnt show the fuel relay wire at all)  Which is right ?  THANKS!

Boy Chris,
That's a doozie. I looked at my shop manual, and I assume that's what you are looking at here. Without the overhead console, the "G4" wire would be on one side of the fuel gauge, with the black jumper on the other side. That black jumper MUST stay there. The only thing I can figure, is both "G4", and "G4A" are on the same post of the fuel gauge. I don't know how you would pull off that trick :P No, you could splice the wires together, but you shouldn't have to. There must be an easier(correct) way. Anyone have an idea? Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks Mike-  you know I wouldn't ask unless it was a juicy, thought provoking problem.  All we need is someone who has it hooked up right to shed some light.  Waiting on CP- who had an SE.  see I understand the diagram on p8-92. . . G4A provides input to relay closing circuit G7 which hits the console light.  its the diagram on p8-93 that has me confused.  G4 and G4A together.   Of course diagram on p8-94 isnt that accurate in that the "DBL" marking for the G4 lead is physically on the left post of the back of the guage.  oh well.  someone will know this.

Chris,
I'm starting to worry about what else in that shop manual is incorrect. The picture on page 8-93 is definitely wrong. The gauge would never work that way. I still think both "G4" and "G4A" are tied to the "DBL" side of the fuel gauge, but I wish I knew how. That's the only way I see this working. Hopefully someone can shed some light on our darkness.

hi- look at the diagram that  shows the low fuel relay.

the relay gets its power from the red acc. 3 hole terminal plug- the black wire to power up the relay and the output to the low fuel light. hence the jumper.

the dark blue wire from the tank goes to the gauge and then to the relay- should say on the relay-gaug. The last post terminal -dark blue with a white tracer stripe goes to the light.- on relay should say lamp.

the relay itself has a built in 5 volt limiter- thats why the other wire that powers the other guages is not used.

hope this helps!!!!

Thanks 71D!!   I have some more questions.  My wiring is a little different ... the 2nd to last connector (G7)  is the blue/white wire that goes to the light (this is how it's wired in the harness.) hope that doesnt matter.   I just went to the garage an wiped the dust off the relay.  ;)  Show nuff "Guage" and "Lamp" are stamped at G4A and G7 !  OK,  from the relay G4A ends up very close to the Fuel Guage.  So in this case, apparently the guage gets power from the relay and as the voltage drops across the guage (due to resistance perhaps from G4?) the relay finally closes to energize G7?

basically yes- make sure the relay is grounded to the case to make it work.
blue wire with stripe to lamp!!!!

beware!!!!! if the lamp is on- head for the nearest gas station!!! on the Deputy-when the gauge says 1/4 tank- not much left in the tank!!!! found out the hard way!!!LOL

Thanks for all your great advice... and the secret about the hidden volt limiter in the relay!

I got my overhead console from Dan at Alohadream cars and am going to retrofit my 72  Cuda with it. I would like to make the 'low fuel" warning light function. After reading your thread, it looks like the low fuel relay plays a critical role there. My 72' manual doesn't have that diagram. Can anyone post it or tell me how to wire it up if I putting it in from scratch? Also, I assume I am going to have to find a low fule relay from somewhere. Does it look like this?

cost me $30.00.  Guy I bought it off new it was a rare piece!!!!
