i think that by the time a guy pays a real pro to rebuild iron heads properly at a good shop, and then pays a real pro to port the iron heads, even with stock valves so to keep it cheaper, it ends up a total waste for money compared to the cheaper alumnum hedas for sale.
also, at work we will not even port any heads unless we do a flow test after to prove the flow, and that costs more, to which guys dont want to pay for either.
dont waste your money.
i think the only way to port iron heads is to do it yourself with the dodge templates you can buy.

Mike thanks for the advice.  I still think I can come in under $899.00 for a ported set of FREE iron heads...

I wanna add one comment to this post Don if you don't mind.   Years ago, we didnt have aluminum heads and stroker kits. I have seen plenty of 10 and 11 second bb's back in the day with all steel engines.  Problem was octane for the compression.  I just did an all steel low budget 499 useing a 400 block.  You know as well as I do that we will never be the fastest car in the game, but 500 ponies is very easy to reach  and fun on the street.   214/181 valves is 110 bucks a set with single groove locks. guides is like 10 a hole.

Enjoy your build baby arm, you can add on to your power plant when you get back from protecting my ole arse.

You rode in my 440-6 car Don, it isnt the fastest, but is very fun to drive and that's what it is all about. Just the conversion you are doing will cost you enough to do it in phases as it is.     ENJOY IT

Thanks for the comments bro.  I have to use what I have for the most part, trying to keep costs down ect.  I pretty sure I will be happy with the iron heads.  I know I wont be the fastest guy out there on the street... its just going to be fun to be in the coversation.

your gonna be fine don.

sheesh, gotta love the ones who wanna spend your money for ya.
and theres nothing wrong with buying what works, if ya can squeeze it off.

drag racing, street racing was built on ingenuity, not pocket depth.

i for one will respect your build the more for going old school, and not break weak and just buy it and run it.
