Which Torque Converter to buy?
« on: September 03, 2009 - 06:30:52 AM »
I'm getting close to doing the build. It's time to buy a torque converter and I'm not sure who's or what to buy.
This is not going to be a Drag Racer, but I still want a good quality piece. Here's what's going it, the motor is a 340 stroked to 416, 727 and 323 gears. I know what you're thinking, that gear is too tall, but it's a done deal for now. We're going with the XS274S Comp Cam, 9.5:1 Ross Pistons.

 I'm looking at a 10'' with 3000 - 3200 stall, is 10'' OK? Who / where would you suggest getting a TC?
How much should I expect to spend?
I'm in Northern IN. if that matters from a freight stand point......Can they be UPS'ed, are these safe with the Brown Box Busters?

10 inch should be fine. If your 416 is set up right,it should have gobs of low end torque so you should not need more than 3000 stall.

The TCI Street Fighter would probably be fine too.

Just thinking out loud, because I don't know, but for a street driven car is 3000 stall not a bit high?... I'm thinking your cruising around town at 40-50MPH in 3rd & tuning less than 2-grand, wouldn't your converter would be slipping like crazy?... Stall would not be reached until about 70MPH.    Maybe I don't understand torque converter operation well enough  :dunno:

I have a 408/904TF with 3.91's, and I am running a PTC 9.5" converter,  Great piece, and great service.  Mine stalls around 3200-3400 RPM, but it is fairly mellow to drive around town surprisingly.  I expected it to slip a lot more than it does before it locks up.  So it isn't too inefficient before the stator overruns.  Run a decent cooler and you'll be fine at lower RPM's.  My fluid temps aren't bad at all, I've even considered running a thermostat to prevent it from overcooling.

 :iagree:

I have 8" PTC with 5800stall in my strip car but you really CAN drive it in the street if you like to. It works very well in the 2500-3000rpm range too.

10" will be very streetable with +3000stall.

I work off the cam & rear gear specs to pick the converter , if the cam starts to make power at 2200 RPM I like to have a minimum of 2-300 RPM Bfore the converter locks up so the engine can get up into the power band Before load is applied to the engine
the other critical factor is to be sure for example if you travel at 2600 RPM at 70 MPH on the highway  that the convert will be locked at that rpm , if not you are generating un-nessisary heat in the tranny  in which case 3000 stall may be excessive

WOW!!!!
$308 for A 10'' TC with a 2800 -3200 Stall ???
I was pretty close to going with a TCI or a PTC for around $500...........This is tempting!
I want to make sure I get a good one, this is a bad place to have something that might fail.
I'll call these guys, there info online looks real good (of course!)
Do you have one of these?

This is their actual web site http://www.accperformance.com/index.html it says nothing about their warranty so you will just have to call and ask. They don't sound too bad.
