Make sure when you drill the holes for the top plates that the holes are facing the correct way.

And what way would that be?   :clueless:

I always drill my hole a 90* angles  :dunno: but maybe I have been doing it wrong all these years?

I think he means, the way the screws line up?

When adding hood pins to the Cuda I used a step drill.

I liked it because it not only gave me the right size hole but I then just touched both sides of the hole with the next step to lightly chamfer the holes for a clean look.

I didn't get the pins in before paint, and I used masking tape with great results.

Also, I did start my holes with a stub length 1/8" drill bit with a good point to keep it from walking off the mark.

All right 71Challenger1,

You motivated me to put on my hood pins, so I decided to document the process.

First, Cuda’s are different than Challenger’s (besides being better than Challenger’s) when it comes to hood pins mounting locations.  On Cuda’s they have a mounting bracket you have to put on to mount the pins to.




First I installed the mounting brackets and loosely mounted the hood pins.  I placed a small amount of grease on the tops of the pins and closed the hood.  This left a mark/location for me to start a pilot hole. I used a 3/32 size drill bit. I then closed the hood (with the pins on) and looked to make sure my holes lined up, and the did.





Next I measured the hood pin diameter (7/16”) and the cap hole diameter (13/16”) and decided to use a ¾” step drill and drill the hole 5/8” in diameter.  I went one step at a time. I taped over the holes. Then I reinstalled the pins to make sure my holes where in the right size.  5/8 worked great, but you could go bigger if needed.





Then I placed the caps over the holes and centered the pins.  I then lined up the screw location (where I thought they looked the best) and taped them to the hood to hold them in place and drilled the holes and mounted the screws.




Here is the finished product.

I was pretty simple and it only took me about 30 minutes.

What have you guys heard about using a Uni-bit?  Are they adviseable for this?  :clueless: I heard they cut through the metal well without much distortion.  I do not have any experience with these.



They are really aggressive though. Practice on a scrap piece so you are familiar with just how much of a 'bite' they have. It's really easy to go oversize so be careful.

This is semi-related.  The holes for the trim plates were so stripped on my hood that I ended up using #6 SS machine screws and Ny-lock SS Nuts.  This was on a 'Cuda hood, which took a little doing.  Looks liek it might be easier on a Chally...

So, even if the screws have been over tightened, you're still not out of luck.
