timing question - How fast

How fast should the timing come in, should it be as fast as possible or can it be too fast?

My initial is set at 16*  (measured without vac adv, and in drive).  My total is 32 (filled in the advance slotts to limit total to 32), but it is all coming in pretty quick (befor 2500 rpm) I have the aftermarket springs in the dist.

Would I get better performance slowing the curve down?

All in by 2,500 is good. Running it at 36* total would definately help. Just one or two degrees off will cost you 10HP.

usually as fast as possible as long as it doesn`t cause detonation

Since I took a personal interest in your advance curve I am pleased to see you have gone ahead with the plan.

I seem to recall on the '68-'70 340s the stock curve was supposed to be pretty much all in by not much over 2000 (although it wasn't a lot of advance).

So yeah, get it in as soon as you can without pinging and you are not going far wrong.

A lot of talk is about total advance and WOT power but if you get the curve coming in early you really notice a big improvement pulling along at part throttle, which is where we do most of our street driving, if we are being honest.

Faster is not always best. A member's 340 we just re-set to slow it down as the car had issues with light throttle ping . It was starting to advance at 1000 and all in by 2200, with a total of 45°(w/o vacuum). It is now a total of 36° total, runs the vacuum advance now, and begins to rise around 1200 and is full in at 2600. The car is much more drivable now and no ping as of yet. The problem is once an engien goes into Ping, it's very difficult to get it out of it during that "pull".
